INDIANAPOLIS – While the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team gets set for its ninth-straight Final Four appearance, senior point guard Moriah Jefferson (Glenn Heights, Texas) was chosen as the winner of the 2016 Nancy Lieberman Award, as announced by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame selection committee on Sunday.

Now in its 16th year, the award recognizes the top point guard in women’s NCAA Division I college basketball. This is the second-straight year that Jefferson has been honored and she is only the fourth Husky player to win the award.

On Saturday, Jefferson became the second Husky to ever be named the WBCA Defensive Player of the Year, joining Stefanie Dolson, who received the honor in 2013-14.

The point guard became the sixth-ever Husky to be chosen as the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year when she earned the accolade on March 3. The Associated Press All-America First Team selection has enjoyed a stellar senior campaign, averaging 12.6 points in 30.5 minutes per game. In total, she leads the team in assists (192) and steals (93) and is one of six Huskies shooting over 50.0 percent from the floor (55.2). During Connecticut’s four-game NCAA Tournament run, Jefferson has averaged 13.0 points, 6.3 assists and 2.5 steals while shooting 55.9 percent from the field.

Jefferson was also tabbed as a USBWA, WBCA and Senior CLASS Award All-American earlier this week.

The Glenn Heights, Texas native joined Jennifer Rizzotti as the only Huskies to tally 600 career assists and 300 career steals on Feb. 27. She notched her third consecutive season with at least 150 assists on her way to helping UConn win its third-straight American Athletic Conference Championship.

With 647 career assists, Jefferson is just two helpers shy of passing Diana Taurasi (648) to become the all-time leader in program history.

Jefferson and the Huskies will compete in their ninth-straight Final Four when they challenge Oregon State at Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Sunday, April 3 at 6 p.m. ET on ESPN.

I find this a particularly interesting qualifier!:)
There have been 17 awards since its inception at the end of the 2000 season. Of those 17, Uconn PGs have won it 8 times - Sue - 3; Diana - 2; Moriah - 2; and Renee only once.

LSU has
only had one player win the award
UNC has
only had one player win the award
Duke has
only had one player win the award
MD has
only had one player win the award
OKSt has
only had one player win the award
Gonz has
only had one player win the award
ND has
only had one player win the award (twice)
Bay has
only had one player win the award

Uconn loans the award out occasionally to other teams for a year or two, but they
do not only have four players who have won it!

Who'd have thunk it? The best PG in the country wins the award for the best PG in WCBB. This same young woman is easily one of the 10 best WCBB in the country, so she is named one of the 10-member WBCA AA squad. Finally, an exceptional defensive player is named DPOY.

The WBCA clearly needs to get a bit more creative in terms of awards given to Moriah Jefferson.

Now lets see if Moriah wins the Dawn Staley Award or do they give it to Tiffany Mitchell like they did last year.

I still think she's underrated. How about that switch last game where she found herself underneath a much taller player? She fought to get in front of her than leaped to get a finger on the entry pass for a turnover. That play doesn't happen all that much in other places but for MoJeff it's business as usual. She's a nearly perfect player.

I really really wonder if Geno and staff had any idea that Moriah was going to be THIS good. Moriah has been recognized as the best guard in the country two years running. Mo is the consummate guard on BOTH ends of the court. We already knew that. To be good is nice. To be great is even better, but to be called THE BEST, is nirvana. Jefferson could not have picked a better time to come to UConn.

I'm guessing that when coach Muffet called Lindsey Allen the best guard in the country during a recent post game interview, she did so tongue in cheek. Everyone knew better, including her. When coaches and players speak, we listen. It will be interesting to see where she goes, and how quickly Mo adjust to the level of play in the WNBA.

Key dates for the WNBA this year -
April 14: WNBA Draft on ESPN2 and ESPNU Live from Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut –

ESPN2 - will provide coverage and analysis of the first round beginning at 7 p.m. ET
ESPNU - will air coverage of the second and third rounds starting at 8 p.m. ET. The draft comes one month before tip-off of the WNBA’s historic 20th season, which opens on Saturday, May 14.

April 24: Training camps open
April 29: Preseason games begin

One of the most exciting players to watch. Very modest and very accomplished. I am delighted she is being recognized.

Glad you said that. It's hard to imagine her being better. In the pursuit of perfection, she's about caught it.

If there was some award for admirable personal qualities (i.e. humility, graciousness, generosity (or unselfishness), kindness, cheerfulness, etc.), our four seniors would all be competitive nationally.

Maybe Geno should establish it in-house. After all, he has a roster full of candidates. Call it the Chris Dailey Award and ask her to present it.
