  1. How does a Jesuit school in Syracuse name their sports teams the Dolphins? I mean it may be on the strained side, but we at least have the homophone driven UConn/Yukon/Huskies relationship to fall back on. Pretty sure there are no dolphins in Syracuse.
  2. Early on, we can't hit a three. Still leading by 4, but...
  3. Finally hit a deep shot, with 7:53 left in the half.
  4. 13 minutes into the game, and I'm back to not liking Mahaney again.
  5. So far, we are not a very good team when Alex sits.
  6. 3:15 mark we finally build a double digit lead.
  7. 38/19 at the half. We looked a lot better the last 7 minutes or so of the half.
  8. Half time, we've got 24 to 13 lead in boards, and an 11 to 4 lead in dimes. We're shooting 48%. but if you take away the 4/16 on threes, we're looking at high 50s on two point attempts.
  9. 2nd half, and we're still leaving the middle wide open way too often.
  10. Ball's last foul was a really bad call.
  11. 76% from 2. 35 buckets on 24 dimes, 7 steals. 9 blocks. We bettered them in every column of the box score, but, well, that was to be expected, against a 2nd year D1 school.
  12. Reed had his third consecutive double-double.
  13. Ball and Ross both impressed me tonight. Mahaney, unfortunately did not.

Maybe there's some kind of esoteric wordplay backstory related to NBA great and Hall of Famer Dolph Schayes playing for the Syracuse Nationals starting in 1948, which is the year that LeMoyne College played its first games.

After Alex left with his 3rd foul, the team finally played well without him (meaning he was terribly needed on the floor at all times prior to that, not that Alex was holding them back). Ross, McNeeley and especially Stewart facilitated a lot of shots. They were aggressive into open space and dumped the ball off when the defense committed. A lot of passing to the open man in the final seconds of the offensive set. It looked like last year. Then the starting 5 came back on and the ball stalled again. Something is preventing the offense from running with the starting 5.

I would be patient with Mahaney simply because I remember Newton struggling in a similar way until the lights went on. But Mahaney's shooting is going to be needed. I'm not sure Diarra can handle those deep 3s late in the clock like Newton used to do.

This is important to remember... Tristan's first 20 games as a Husky --> 9ppg, 3.8rpg, 4.1apg on 35/34/90 shooting. My memory is that he was kinda considered the weakest part of our starting 5 for most of the year.

Mahaney can play. He's proven that. This is a different system and it takes time for a "lead guard" to figure out their role/place. He's not really the point guard, he's not really the shooting guard. He's a piece. And that, coupled with everything UConn, has to be a difficult adjustment for a guy who was asked to be a primary player for his first two years. I thought he had a few outstanding drives to the cup of which one or two bounced out and he had a couple of shots rim out. We've already seen where he can be a player when he was arguably our best player on the floor against the best overall team we've played thus far. It'll take a little longer than maybe we thought, but he's going to be a big time player here.

Way too early to be down on him although I understand that his physicality, speed and defense are questioned at this point. Can he lock down the opposition’s star guard? He does not have to carry the team the way Newton did at times but I see him making 3’s in bunches to put games away.

BTW: Dolphins are lightning fast, smart and friendly creatures who will steal the fish off your hook if you are not quick enough. How this relates to basketball I have no idea.

Fanta said they were looking a mascot (not specific to basketball) that was fast and smart and the Dolphin fit. Not sure it relates well to Syracuse, but when your school is founded in 1948, probably not many options available.
