Let's talk Jaylin Stewart

Our entire team leans more catch and shoot than dribble create/shoot.

Ball - likely working on his drive, mid-range, so he might be trying to emulate Ray Allen and become that.
Demary, Jr - splits stats show he is much more effective on catch and shoot - drives to the hoop were inconsistent.
Smith - more of a dribble creator
AK - right place, right time guy and point forward gets putbacks, bad switches with a 6'2" guard on him, etc. Catch and shoot 3 shooter.
Mullins - TBD
Furphy - TBD

Hopefully Stewart has been working hard in the off season to develop something in his arsenal.

We know centers like him will get limited touches as he he can only score close to the basket and I don't like relying on a Fresman like Mullins. Just let him play his game and take open shots. I think Jaylin is probably the only player besides Demary and Smith who can penetrate so I hope to see more of this next year as we need that on offense.

Karaban and Reed are studs that shouldn't be taking back seats to Stewart. Those 4 are all conference level players, if not all american. We need Stew to fit in around them.

I was talking more about initiating offense. Stewart should be ahead of both in that part. Karaban is good glue guy and we should keep him that way. We saw last year when he had to initiate offense how awful he was. He is slow and can't dribble and is very predictable. I love Karaban but he is very Limited offensively. I do think Stewart has the skills to be better offensive threat than Karaban and I hope he shows it this year. Reed will score alot of points from others passing to him and offensive rebounds.

Absolutely not, stewart does not have a good handle. Hopefully that changes. Hamilton was a great passer. Would have played in nba for a long time if he did not leave early. apparently hated school

It is when I think Stewart has chance to be bigger provider of offense than Karaban scoring. I think for our offense and team to have a chance to win it all Stewart is going to have to be a key contributor penetrating to the rim and scoring. We just can't rely on Demary to do that all the time. Maybe I'm a little too high on Stewart and he will just be a little better than this years version but that would be big disappointment for a player of his skillset. He has no McNeeley in front of him this year to stop his development so he has to step up and be one of the scoring leaders with Demary, Ball and Reed. I think we will be a very tough team to beat with Stewart able to score in multiple ways. Karaban has proven besides good cuts and shooting 3s he doesn't have consistent other ways to score.

Last year we had 2 guys that could just take the ball and try to get a bucket. Diarra (injured and playing out of role) and Liam (playing out of role)

Enter Silas Demary. An upperclassman double digit scoring PG from a high major program that hung 20+ points on 4 different tournament teams to end the season. Scoring is his job

I expect moderate improvement from Solo Ball. As the season went on, he became automatic in the midrange after getting run off the line. The next step is to finish closer to the hoop to give us another perimeter scorer

Also enter Tarris Reed. If the perimeter isn’t working, just drop it to him in the paint. He will go get a bucket. There were 7 games where he played 25+ minutes last year, and he averaged 17 PPG in those games. Last year we had no pressure release if the guards and forwards couldn’t make it work. Now we have a BE 1st team caliber C

Karaban can go back to his natural role closer to 2024. Braylon will be a shooter obviously. This leaves Stewart plugging the holes of whatever is missing. Some games it will be defense and rebounding, some games cutting and finishing, some games being a floor spacer

Yeah my hope is that Jaylin can step up his game in being aggressive and doing what McNeeley did for us as he has the athletic tools to do that. LIke I said before if Jaylin just comes back only a little improved over last year he would be a disappointment. I think he will start and by his comments and obviously he came back to start and not play behind a undersized Fresman at SF. Not saying Mullins won't have an impact as we always need great shooters I just think it will be from the bench as a super sub. That is just my hope. It might not happen and Mullins ends up taking the SF and we are kind of limited offensively again this year like we were last year without enough creators. I know Tarris will score more inside than last year but my concern is when defense gets tough we will only have 1 player who can break down teams on offense at a time.

The love of Stew, based solely on potential over actual production, is really something. Stew is a career 3.9ppg scorer and has disappeared more than he's appeared. He has lots of potential and has isolated flashes. He has shown no ability to be consistent.

But, for the second straight year, we have a thread based solely on how he's going to be the key to the season and should be our 2nd option on offense. Last year, he had early-entry potential and would be in the teens as a scorer. We have people saying that Stew should get more shots and initiate offense more than a guy who (so far) was a starter on two national championship teams, will end his career with 1800-2000 points, and may go down as the biggest winner in the history of UConn basketball. Peak Boneyardin'.

My maybe hot take is Jaylin will be better in 25-26 than Liam was in 24-25. In my opinion he has clear potential to be the leading scorer. He doesn’t need to be it and easily may not be, but totally could be.

Yep totally agree. There is no excuses this year. It sounds like from his comments he knows what he has to do. He has the ability but will he actually do it is the question. If not Mullins will be starting or at least playing a lot of minutes at SF. My concern with this team like last year is who is going to create off the dribble when things get tough. I guess we could play both Demary and Smith at times as those are the only 2 players who have proven they have that ability. Stewart has in flashes but hasn't been consistent.
 
Stew should definitely watch the McNeeley tape because it offers strong hints about what is possible in the offense. Given that, I’m not sure Stew is the natural connector that Liam was but I think he is capable of matching a lot of Liam’s shooting whether catching and shooting or on the drive.

That would be Furphy at SF.

Mullins is squarely a SG who happens to be 6'6" now, 185. Furphy is north of 200.

Don’t Silas and Mullins create off the dribble? Alex will also have to be better at that too. Can Solo?

No Mullins isn't known for his ability to create off the dribble. He is more like Hawkins. A great shooter who is a good athlete. I think Alex is who he is and I prefer him not creating much off the dribble unless it is off design pick and rolls. Solo really is more of a mid-range creator for his shot. He hasn't shown the propensity to score near the basket off the dribble consistently. Maybe he can add to his game and have a jump but obviously Jaylin has the biggest chance to make a leap this year if he feels it is his position to lose. He has the athletic ability and the skills but we just need to see it more from him. if not this team will be more like 22-23 than 23-24 but without the the huge advantage at Center that 22-23 team had.
 
The extra shots will come as we cut down on turnovers. Even a 50% reduction in TO's will result in additional possessions/shots. These extra shots will lead to higher scoring averages for Stewart, The Bear and Alex. I think that Mullins will get his because he can shoot it from anywhere. And based on video, TN 2.0 will get his too when the offense breaks down. I like this team. But anyway, Stewart better be good defensively, because he is not outscoring Alex or Mullins.

I just rewatched the Mullins highlights. I’m drooling. He is working into the rim and scoring quite a bit from inside. Of course he has the long range and step backs too. Just about any shot he takes has a good chance of going in.

Let’s hope he can put the ball in the floor. We don’t need three spot up shooters out there at once.

Here here…yes let’s hope he, Furphy, and Stewart can all Euro step bc we need creators…we got catch and shooters for days.

Furphy isn't starting over Stewart. Mullins will start if Stewart isn't stepping up and he can only play about 10-15 minutes at SG since we have Ball there and probably see some sets with both Demary and Smith in together for extra ball handling. Mullins is going to play at 15 minutes at SF and maybe 10 minutes at SG. Furphy is battling for the reamaing minutes with Jayden Ross and Koroma.

I genuinely don’t know what is compelling you to believe Stewart is a better on ball player than Karaban? There’s just nothing in the last two years to support that conclusion.

I genuinely wonder sometimes if people actually watched Stewart last year? The only really positive things he did were shoot open 3s and finish open layups and dunks. He hasn’t shown on ball ability since high school.

I meant Furphy "is" a SF, while Mullins "is" a SG. and agree with you completely on depth

I did actually watch him and their are vides of him going to the hoop to score while guarded. He also came in with a varied offensive game so it is in his skillset and looks more comfortable than Karaban dribbling the ball even though we have only seen it in spurts. Obviously he is going to havre to bring this year or he will be sitting on the bench. I think for us to reach our height he is going to have to be more than a jump shooter. If Karaban is one of the players when the shotclock is winding down that is going to have to score than I don't see this year's team going that far.
