Below is a spreadsheet with the stats of the top 17 DI freshmen by my loose reckoning. If you believe others should be represented then so note it. And why? Anyone have a method to process the stats to quantitatively point to a top 5. For others yes, yes, I know you don't like stats. This is just for fun. The stats are provide by ESPN in a web page.

I've liked Mara Braun since seeing her in high school -- the Wayzata Trojans. I'm not sure I'd put her at the top of this list, just out of SoS (so far) consideration. But she's a significant talent. I expect great things from her, eventually.

It looks like this ranking is based only on scoring. Just by eyeballing the list, I'd put VanSlooten at the top followed by Flau'jae, Rice, McMahon. The rest of the list is probably statistically significant this early.

Taniya Latson from FSU should definitely be on here. Would throw Janiah Barker from Texas A&M on the list as well though she’s currently injured, Taina Mair from Boston college, currently 5th in the country in assists as a freshman, and Kylie Lavelle from Drexel.

Great stuff putting this together. Latson is the big one missing, she's averaging 25 ppg, shooting 50/40/80. Vanslooten just has a great knack for basketball watching her play. Good post moves and ball handling skills. Great off the bounce. Rice is another big time standout who will be great. She seems to be deferring a bit to Osborne and it might take another year until she really blossoms. Garzon has been stellar for Indiana too. They lost today but she's filled her role extremely well there.

Lauren Betts has great stats on a per minute basis (6 points/4 rebounds in 8 minutes per game), she just picked the one school where she'd have virtually no shot to contribute as a freshman (and might still be on the bench as a sophomore).

As for top 5, from players I've seen I'd include Latson, VanSlooten, Rice, Garzon and McMahon. I only saw Beers play vs Iowa and she didn't play well. LSU players have inflated stats right now due to their awful schedule. Haven't seen Braun play.

Ashlynn Watkins (SCar) and Lauren Betts (Stanford) get half the minutes or less of some of these other frosh you list, but there production matches or exceeds many of these starters.

fWIW: Ashlynn MIGHT be leading the nation in dunks this year with two. NOT THAT THEY COUNT ANY MORE THAN BUNNIES

Raegan Beers could play tight end for the OSU Football Team. Runs the court extremely well, and has great hands. This kid has so much upside, and is already the best post player at OSU. On top of all that, a great attitude. If she plays all 4 years at OSU, she will likely end her career as the leading rebounder.

I agree regarding D Powe. She actually leads MSU in minutes per game. She is doing well in her stats. However I’m most impressed with how she lets the game come to her and her versatility. She starts at the four but the three is likely her best position. She has very quick hands and feet combined with great size for a freshman. Coach Purcell will rotate her to the top of the 1-3-1 zone. She often doesn’t look to score but she is a “plug and play” with the ability to rotate around the lineup and still be effective.

Thanks for posting this spreadsheet. I often take a peek and see how players are doing, especially the freshmen players, with their programs. Oregon has a pretty good trio of freshmen players that are doing well.

I took Win Shares from Her Hoops Data and multiplied by SoS from RealTimeRPI sorted by Per Game.

This can be used to identify players who could have been overlooked but not as specific rankings.

I think Watkins and Cooper will end up being better players than most on this list but I get what it's doing and not everything is about SC.

The truth is the truth. I see your point. Sometimes freshmen are pretty decent but are forced to play and put up big numbers because they are simply the best option. Others play regardless of who is ahead of them. A Watkins is especially in an odd predicament with the mix of talent and experience ahead of her. I really like her game.

Someone told me the fans at OSU call her "The Hammer" Very fitting for a post player.

I agree, and wouldn’t be surprised to see a kid like her in the portal at the end of the season. Saniyah Rivers’ experience at NC St might figure in decisions for a lot of kids at various schools. She got her NC ring riding the bench and now she gets lots of playing time elsewhere.

I love watching her play, her physicality and great hands remind me a lot of Jess Shepard. Beers is going to be very good, she also has some Janel McCarville in her game as well.

Is Gardiner out for the season? I was very interested in watching her play this year as well. Wyoming is in between Utah and Colorado, so I am very interested in your Freshman bigs! I am rooting for them.

Can Watkins play defense? What's her offense like? Academic interests? Just asking...

Rumor is that Timea Gardiner will suit up for OSU's January 13 home game vs WSU. OSU Fans are pretty excited to see the duo of Gardiner & Beers as our high/low post combo

Watkins is someone who I think sticks. She's getting more minutes as the season unfolds and seems to be finding her way in the collegiate game. SC is in a predicament at the end of this year with Boston, Cardoso, and Amihere all draft eligible, but all 3 could return. Watkins is in a good position to get big minutes next year provided 1 of them leave, and likely takes over a starting role the following year (or as a sophomore if 2 leave). I think Feagin is more likely the odd woman out, as Watkins has huge upside and likely beats out Feagin for playing time long term. I also see a pending log jam with Cooper/Johnson/Fulwiley all 1 year apart and competing for a PG spot.

She won’t transfer. She is getting significant PT - not mop up. . She is from Columbia. Her parents live in Columbia. I’m not worried a bit.

You never know, but I agree she's getting on floor consistently abd performing and the depth chart should open up quite a bit with Saxton, Boston and Amihere likely moving on
