The company doing my lawn wants to do two more applications - early nov and mid December.

Anyone here add fertilizer when the ground is likely frozen?

Nope. Late fall and that's it.

I have seen some that will do an application of certain types of fungicides in December to prevent snow mold and other patch issues (this has become more prevalent because our winters have been off & on cold/warm more recently).

What was their logic?

Really only need 2 applications. Early spring pre-emergent to help with weed control , then early June. Once summer hits, too dry and heat stress will only hurt the lawn.

Having said that, I did do a fall application the past 2 years (day before expected rain) because of our dry spell. Anything more s a waste of money and I’m a lawn geek

Honestly, if you do the extra applications it will help. Your grass will have stronger roots through winter and weeds will have a harder time getting a quick start in Spring. Unfortunately, using so much fertilizer is bad for the environment, but there is no denying its effectiveness.

In Vermont, they call it “winterizing” and do it whenever the ground is still bare around Thanksgiving.

Early Spring is a big one for weed control too. Most people wait until the weeds are already thriving to hit it the first time.

If you had a granular fall fertilization which ideally is before October 30, you should be good to go. Find out when and what went down on the last application and decide from there. You may not need either, they're just overselling if they can. The mix for a fall fertilizer is lower in nitrogen, and higher in phosphorus and potassium which benefits the root system more.

My grandmother grew up on a farm in Canada. She always referred to those three numbers on a fertilizer bag as, "up, down, and all around." First number if for leaves, the second is for roots, and the third is for all around health.

Sounds like some all-purpose grandma wisdom
