But correlation and causality are different. Which is the cause and which is the effect?

Well this does tend to explain the term " crazy cat lady" much like the " Mad Hatter" and mercury poisoning.
So what comes first the chicken or the egg? Are you crazy to collect cats or does collecting cats make you crazy? lol.
