If your players are smart enough to know to get a good look, it's better to not let the defense set up. That said, his players obviously were not smart enough to get into the frontcourt for the chance at a decent look.

You're right - It is definitely worth a first look. You can often catch the other team celebrating and maybe leak someone long. But once it isn't there, then call the timeout. You have an athletic big playing against four guards - you might be able to throw him a jump ball 75 feet away. Odds are against you, but settling for a prayer beyond mid court doesn't give you much of a chance.

If they are really alert, best thing to do is inbound to mid court and call the immediate timeout. Then you have an inbounds play from 45 feet away instead of 90. Hard to think of that on the fly as the first option though.
