Why in the world would anyone want to dredge up the woes of both football programs during March Madness? How dumb is that?
 
Millions with no interest in football is just a silly, irresponsible statement with zero factual basis. Given there are 3 pro football teams in the region, it's a bit of nonsense. This is an agenda driven statement by BBallers in the administration looking to return to the BE. They need to be eradicated. One University, One fan base.
 
Isn't there a chicken and egg problem in the statement that "Tens of millions live between Boston and New York, and not enough care about college football."?

Could it be that not enough in our region care about college football because there are no compelling teams/conferences?

If we're in a P5 with regular home games against the best teams in the country, you'll see interest pick up real quick.

TouchdownHusky would get his wish. Should be able to recruit offensive talent to play in that conference. Texas, OU, OSU, Baylor, TCU... and sprinkle it with regional schools, Cuse and BC would be closed off. I have a large F bomb list to get off my chest.

The statement was probably taken out of context as part of an explanation for weak attendance. UConn does have to build up its football fan base in Connecticut especially, and then in New England and New York. I could easily imagine the conversation going something like:

UConn official: "Our greatest strength is our market. Over twenty million people live within 2 hours of our football stadium."
Reporter: "But how many of them are UConn fans? I see your football attendance last year averaged under 30,000 this year."
UConn official: "You have to look at that in the context of how young our football program is. Historically, not many in the northeast have cared about college football. And UConn only moved up to D1A in 2003. We have made a lot of progress building our football fan base since 2003, and we know we have more work to do. We're working hard on it."

Story after editing: "A UConn official summed up the school’s situation in media terms. Tens of millions live between Boston and New York, and not enough care about college football."
 
They will all be amazed at how fast that fan base grows once this team starts posting 10+ win seasons and bringing home bowl trophies year in and year out. Then the gripe will be why a school with such a rabid fan base can't build an elite stadium. There will always be something to complain about.

Certainly agree with first part... but I've yet to see where anyone wants to slink back to the BE and give up football. There won't be much left for non-football schools pretty soon.

9-10 win seasons would fill the Rent year after year. New Englanders go to see winning teams. For the most part they're spoiled with teams that win championships and compete year in and year out, makes it hard to go to games not expecting to win when you're so accustomed to it
