The outside firm report after complaints from former players discovered "the programs rules perpetuated racial or cultural biases and diminished the value of cultural diversity. It also allowed some current and former staff members to demean and bully others. "The Iowa president vows the climate and culture must and will change within our football program. Ferentz has vowed to do a better job so everybody leaves his program knowing they were treated fairly and given an equal opportunity. An interesting aside was the staff talking down George Kittle to scouts who is a TE for the 49's and a 2 time pro bowler. Pretty disappointed in Ferentz that he allowed this to go on for years as he has been there for 21 seasons.

Coach Ferentz was on Golic and Wingo this morning. I didn’t get a good sense he sees or understands the big picture issues. The only specific changes he mentioned were allowing the players to wear hats and earrings and changing the music used during practice. They created a player advisory council, including alums going back to the 1970’s. In his interviews with current and former players, he asked if he was part of the problem or part of the solution—if issues weren’t brought to him or he didn’t take them seriously, it’s unlikely he can be part of the solution.

Hats and earrings? Ferentz is being vilified for not allowing players to wear hats and earrings? Gimme a break.

The investigation focused on allegations of disparate treatment including disciplinary action, drug testing, conditioning practices and goals, verbal abuse, as well as lack of follow up on issues and concerns about retaliation if issues were brought forward.

Allowing players to wear hats and earrings and changing music played during practice were the examples Coach Ferentz shared as program changes as the result of the inquiry.

Disciplinary action, drug testing, conditioning practices and goals, verbal abuse, et al, should all be the same for each and every player. No doubt and any deviations should be investigated. But hats and earrings? Can we clean it up a bit?

As he should. It’s a hat. Get over yourself. Football teams aren’t run like the military anymore. Welcome to this century.
