SGA. OKC
NBA leading scorer, 32 pts, 5 rebounds, 6 assists on 52% shooting.
Takes on average a bit over just 1 three per game.
So watching him yesterday make a ton of short baseline jumpers, bank shots, and creative drives from all angles. It’s way more entertaining than watching players jack 3’s.
St. John’s has guards who pull up and do this from 2 and I know the right personnel are needed for that, but the college game has basically eschewed the 2 point shot in favor of the 3 with many coaches even stopping their team from them unless necessary.

Many of our most exciting players from the last decade plus had mid-range game - Kemba, Baz, Boat, Lamb. Miss the way the game used to be played - both college and pros. I enjoyed watching St. John’s run their stuff, for example

Here here. Time to move back the arc in college and the pros. The players have gotten too good at shooting

Too bad SGA didn't play good down the stretch at home against the Wolves. They blew a 24 point game with using their small lineup. If the small lineup doesn't shoot well and they double team SGA they suck. Kind of live and die with the 3 in that small ball lineup especially when Jalen Williiams isn't playing well penetrating. I know OKC is the best team in the west but they have definite warts and our having some issues as the season progresses. Hopefully Chet can get healthier as he is still key to complement SGA and Jalen Williams as that much needed 3rd scorer.

You can't breathe on him. He has taken the role of foul merchant to near historic levels.

With analytics being so widely used and teams looking to stop the 3 and protect the rim the mid range is often left wide open. With the right spacing that shot will always be there.

If you can get the right guys that can hit the midrange for 53%+, then it's slightly better than a guy who hits 35% from 3.

The best teams going forward will be the ones that have multiple guys who can check both of those boxes.

Edit: if you see my post below, these stats are unicorn-type with current CBB players.

If you go to CBB Analytics (I don't have a sub, but some on here do), you can see that SJU's big claim to fame is lots of midrange shots, but even they aren't that good %-wise from midrange (39.6%) and non-rim paint % (41.4%). The CBB average for those two shots are 35.9% and 41.2%.

Even with their horrible 30% 3pt shooting rate, they are still more efficient than their midrange shots

Nearly all of the KP Top-20 offenses shoot 3's and shots at the rim. For nearly all teams, the midrange still a highly-inefficient shot if they shoot 35%+ from 3 and 53%+ at the rim (which many do).

They are good at getting a rebound and powering or muscling it back in. Us not so much it seems.

The basics, limit turnovers, get the ball inbounds, box out and rebound, find the open man etc.......
The offense the last two years was fantastic to watch. There were exceptional players on those two teams so I did not expect the same fluid offense but this group seems lost at times.

Stop taking shots form the mid court logo

SGA’s game works so well because he might be the best in the world at changing his pace and getting defenders to overcommit. The average guy can’t do what he does.

OKC is also top 10 in the league in both 3s attempted and 3s made, so it’s not like their offense isn’t still predicated on shooting 3s.

I like SGA a lot but when I see what he can do in today's NBA it's clear Jordan would average 45 in today's game.

I really hope Castle can emulate SGA's game. I think Steph has the talent to at least play similar to SGA, though would be asking a ton to be close to as good as SGA.
