Kia Nurse - Canadian National Team Statistics

The last six games for the Senior national team, a seventeen year old playing against older international players and she shoots 33% (7 for 21) from the three point line. It appears I am considerably more excited about her potential to develop her long distance shooting skills.

Kia has played 23 games with her senior national team. Who else in college could say that, now or ever?
Over 3 years, she shot 28-90 or 31% from the arc. Not a Mater Dei level, but a decent starting point.
Recall that her strength is her defense and her overall game. No one ever said she was the best shooter in her class. That distinction would go to her teammate Courtney Ekmark.

At 6' tall, she's going to be a matchup nightmare for other guards. I could see her as a Kayla McBride type of player, or maybe even a player like Dee. Her upside is huge.

Overall for 2013 her assist to turnover ratio is worrisome (26/56 = 0.46), which
is similar to her A/T for the 2012 U17 World Championship (15/34 = 0.44).
If she's going to play point she'll need to improve a whole bunch in that department.
She probably won't play point at UConn, but those numbers are still not good.

Imagine what Mo's stats would have been as a freshman or Chong's this year against France, Russia, or team USA (Diana, Sue, Maya, Tina et al) and all of a sudden these numbers and Assists to Turnovers look pretty hot.

Excellent call! - Against her own age group and in a competitive training atmosphere, she will get better quickly. She has a fearless look about her though.
Let's see. 17 years old and starting point guard on a fairlly good national team. And some are questioning her stats? Give me a break. First, let's look at the caliber of the opponent. They are not AAC teams. Second, how did Chong or many other top recruits look in their freshman year. I think we are going to see a lot of people very, very surprised next year.

Couldn't agree more. The kid is the starting PG on the Canadian national team. She's been playing against the likes of Dumerc (France), Bird, Taurasi, and Whalen from the US, and all the other top guards in the world. The fact that she has ANY statistics against those players in nothing short of amazing.
To say her play "will need to improve a whole bunch", and her statistics "not good" is way too overly critical. In 2013, the most recent FIBA tourney where Canada qualified for the 2014 championships, she had 15 assists to 11 turnovers. That was over a time period of 6 games. I think her improvement over the games she's played as part of the national team has been nothing short of sensational.

As I'm sure you know, I wasn't talking about her overall play or her overall statistics. I was focused
on only one stat, namely, the assist to turnover ratio. The fact is that over the past two years she
has had 45 assists and 97 turnovers.
Unless you are prepared to say that an A/TO ratio of 0.46 is "good", then you have to deal with
the only alternative, which is "not good". To state that her A/TO ratio "will need to improve
a whole bunch" is to state the obvious.
Yes, I know that she's the starting point guard for the Canadian National Team and that her
coaches and team mates think she is terrific. I'm sure the coaches and team mates of our other
recruits think the same about them. Like you, I fervently hope that Kia will become a
transcendant talent at UConn, but I think we have to recognize that when it comes to playing
D1 basketball at the highest level, Kia, like our other recruits, will be a work in progress.
