I think it is more like implying that Breanna hasn't had to struggle as the one who has to carry the team... unless you think she has. I didn't say she couldn't... just that she hasn't had to be the go to player. No disrespect to Stewie,, but you aren't going to imply that DT's last two championship teams are equivalent in skill levels to Stewart's. Stewie might be end up being the GOAT, but I don't think she is there yet. By the way, was your choice Breanna or did you just have a problem with my logic?
I would actually say her freshman year she had to lead the juniors, seniors, and sophomores on her team who had just compiled a record of 1-7 over their previous eight games against ND. A game in which she shot .625/.800/1.000 while the rest of the team shot .413/.222/.875, scoring 35% of the teams points. (I wouldn't actually say that, just in the way I wouldn't say DT had to carry her teams - she led them, but 'carrying' disrespects the whole concept of Uconn and team.)
And I was just objecting to the idea of greatness in a team sport being contingent on the strength or lack of strength of teammates - just like the idea of someone being more 'clutch' because they consistently put themselves in jeopardy of losing and pull wins out at the last moment, instead of taking care of business from the beginning and never being in danger.

That could be the starting five for the next Olympic team as far as I am concerned. What would Moriah Jefferson have to do to break into this group?
WNBA all-star, and wait for Bird, DT, Whalen to retire.

Easy call. The majic, the magnificent, the female Jordan. You know who.

IF we win the National Championship I think Stewie has to go down as the best ever. My fave will always be Taurus though.

I agree with Kara's list as shown on her SNY show, but she did pop a couple of "extras" in there to cover herself. This discussion is kind of like asking: what is your favorite car? Lots of emotion in the answer like "1971 Pinto is my favorite because I went on my 1st date with my wife in it."

I've been a UConn fan since 1995 and it's hard to argue with the top 5 listed by Kara. Both DT and Stewie could do the "OMG!!!" play upon occasion and when the opportunity presented itself.. I luv them both. And Maya and Lobo and ....

.-.
Geno may have some thoughts about this....In a recent interview, he named those 3 as the greatest, giving each her due. He seemed to acknowledge that Stewie had the most talent, that Maya had the most self-composure, and that Dee had that certain intangible set of leadership skills. We can compare individual statistics, but Geno wasn't: by the time he was finished, he clearly was indicating that, as a coach, what's important to him is how a player makes the team successful. My sense was that he's eternally grateful for the privilege of coaching each of them, but that Dee was still the one he'd pick if he absolutely had to pick one.

Win a national player of the year award at least (although another Lieberman award couldn't hurt!)

How crowded is our treasure chest of jewels at uconn that a list like this can leave off several great NPY award winners

I just disagree with almost everything you say but that is the beauty of having a forum like this to voice our opinions. Have a blessed day. :)

So this ranking includes pro career accomplishments, and not just college?
Well the question was (as I understood it) how would Jefferson break into the Olympic team or Olympic starting five.

Well that's how I was answering it anyway.

Yeah - I got that sense from his statement, but I also note that he is still coaching Breanna so does not have the perspective of time and reflection. Personality wise I think there is a greater affinity to Diana which may also color his judgement a bit - the Latin character being strong in both.

the Latin character being strong in both.
Google maps says that via the Strada, it's 30 kilometers between Montella and Taurasi

Wait until Sue retires?... ;)

It depends what debate you want to discuss IMHO. I think most fans would agree that Moriah has done more as a college PG than Sue did. Not to take anything away from Sue, but Moriah has led this team into the stratosphere with results that I don't think any other team will ever match (if we win the NC this year). BUT... Sue has been the best PG in the world for many years as a pro, leading the US Olympic team to one gold medal after another. I think folks sometimes look at Sue's pro career when comparing to Moriah, and that's not quite fair as Moriah is only a senior in college...

I have the hardcover Sports Illustrated Commemorative Issue (#07336), "Absolutely Perfect!" It honors the 2001-2002 NC team. Among the features is the "All-Time Team," selected by SI in 2002. Here they are:

First Team: Svet, Sue, Rebecca, Kara, and Nykesha.

Second Team: Shea, Kerry, Jamelle, Jenn, and Diana.
P.S. I also have the 2003 SI Commemorative Edition (#00006). No all-star teams but an interesting article by John Wooden: "Why I'm a UConn Fan."

P.P.S. For a page marker I have a bogus $1,000,000 bill with Geno on front ("In Geno We Trust") and Gampel Pavilion on the back.

Thank God I'm a bit of a pack rat! :)

Well on my pack rat stuff says (and this is just mine)

First Team - Bird, Taurasi, Moore, Stewart, Charles
Second Team - Jefferson, Sales, Abrosimova, Lobo, Wolters
Third Team - Rizzotti, Ralph, KML, Cash, Dolson

Still have Montgomery, Hartley and Bascom left but need a couple more AA's to make a 4th team. ;)

Be interesting who would make a top 5 of none AA's. I would think Hayes, Jones would be locks. Faris, Strother??

In addition to who you mentioned, Jamelle, Barbara Turner, Laura Lishness, and, at this point, Morgan Tuck.

Hey. My million dollar bill has a picture of Reagan on it. Yours must be a fake.

What would Breanna's stats be if she wasn't taken out of so many games because the other team was getting blown out? Also, how is it Breanna's fault that she was surrounded by more talented players? That's what it sounds like to me. Finally, didn't UConn lose D's freshman year when she played with Sue, Swin, Asjha and Tameka? That's an awful lot of talent.

Okay, so what you do is divide her total points for a season by the minutes played and then multiply by 40. That gets you a points per 40 minutes stat. Then, you can do that for Maya and D, too, and do it for rebounds, assists, blocks, and steals. That gives about as even as you can performance-wise without digging a lot deeper.

This is like arguing the Great Man theory of History - whether the time defines the person or the person defines the time. Stewie is obviously going to leave UConn as the most accomplished player in Husky history which still leaves the very subjective question of who was best able to take ownership of any specific moment in time; I'd lean to D and then Maya in that regard but it's largely a function of opportunity. The best argument for Stewie will probably end up being her frosh year when her late season surge had such an impact.

//accidently posted this in the Sue's interview thread -- can't delete//

I just can't get passed picking the GOAT. She just has some kind of IT power for me. We haven't seen Breanna have to carry a team for two years and see what she has without the best team around her. Breanna may end up being unstoppable in the WNBA, but D already is. Throw Tina Charles in with those four and I have my starting team.
THIS. What Diana did in 2003 and 2004 is all you need to know about the GOAT. Maybe Stewie could do the same, but she just won't have to. Granted, lifting the team to the championship as a freshman is pretty damned impressive, especially since Diana could not.
