Karaban still weighing decision whether to return or go pro

Last year by the time all the moves were over everyone one of us believed we had the deepest team since Hurley became coach. We ended up have one of the least deep team of Hurley’s tenure. Last time when the portal music stopped we thought we had 2 maybe three impact freshman, we had a can’t miss transfer portal addition in AM, we had a sophomore class that was ready to breakout.

The only one of those for sure things that even closely hit its mark was the development of our sophomore class….but that was only because of Ball, Stewart came up short if we are being honest, Ross well who knows, we can see the athletic gifts but I think we can all agree he came up short.

Deep right we nailed that one by the end of the year we were lucky to have an eight man rotation.

Transfer portal can’t miss edition well that player is not on our roster anymore.

Whether AK comes back or not if we don’t remember how to play defense without a significant fall off in our offensive efficiency we will end up like this year.

The only thing I would say is certain is that Mullins is going to be a stud and if he plays like every other high school player we have ever gotten that was this good, he will be BEFOY.

Other than that we have maybe top ten talent if AK stays but if we don’t remember how not play connected and Stewart and Ross do not come out looking significantly better than they were last year (Ross more than Stewart) we will end up with a season very similar to this year.

I know we are pretty confident Demary and Mullins coupled with who is coming back and potentially Reibe as a freshman who might contribute significant quality minutes, that we are better than last year.

We were pretty confident in what we had pre season last year and we were not even close to being right…….keeping things in perspective.

I hope they have a plan to get one more for sure impact big even with AK coming back our frontline is dangerously thin and relying on a freshman who might be a two or three year project (Reibe) and an undersized Stewart as our depth.

How can anyone be real comfortable with that group from what we saw this year. We still need one maybe two proven front court players. Let Stewart play a big SF as his main position he can be first off the bench subbing for Mullins or Solo depending on what is happening on the floor. Demary is going to play 35+ minutes a game imo. He may even reach AK 2023-2024 level minutes.

They have to have a plan they are the best staff in the country. But if you look at the players still left in the portal it is not flush with the type of players we need most. I am sure there are a few under the radar players that we could mold into being what we need but the whole idea with portal additions is they come in ready to play their role with no molding necessary.

20 minutes away. Or not.
Not the deadline is 11:59 PM not AM. He has all day to keep us guessing. If they are trying to make some big show out of it….i think it is not working…..most of us no matter how much we appreciate AK are starting to get frustrated with this situation.

I understand the staff already knows and unless there is some type of huge announcement that yes AK is leaving but we got ___________ (fill in blank with best big still left in the portal) this whole thing starts to look pretty selfish. Those who need to know already now…..but is this really fair to the fans like all of us. It’s like waiting to hear from the repair shop if the fix is simple or you are about to spend thousands to keep your car on the road.

Pull the freaking band aid off please Alex.

Are there many top 4s better than Demary, Solo, Karaban, Reed?

and that doesn't even consider Braylon Mullins, Malachi Smith, and Jaylin Stewart..

Yeah those 8 are probably the close-game rotation. Throw in whatever big we have for backup (Reibe or portal) and Ross if he manages to get out of his own head

A second round NBA draft choice can earn 6 million on a 3 year deal that doesn’t affect cap if they prove worthy… or get close to nothing. Is that correct?
How much does Alex get on NIL?
What opportunity would he get in the NBA to prove himself?
What are Cam and Newt currently getting?
Anyone know?

2 way deals can get cut at anytime, ask Sanogo.

2nd rounders can also sign guaranteed contracts like Ajax.

I’m sure he’s getting a lot of info from teams today that he’s not had the past months so he should be able to decide today.

I’m wondering if I’ll know before I go to sleep?

But you said he should’ve had all the info weeks ago and should’ve informed you of his decision already?

Yes for the top players who sign two way contracts they usually guarantee for about $750K. It is the second contract if they are not regulars after two years on a two way contract that usually lacks any guaranteed money.

Many of them sign another deal but the guaranteed money is usually not part of the second contract unless the player has found a way to earn a spot on an nba roster before the first two way contract expires.

When Sanogo got cut he had already earned more than the guaranteed amount so they could release him without having to pay him anything.

AK has to be at or over $1m in NIL guaranteed money if he stays. And if he gets hot and we play ourselves into a final four he will have opportunity to add onto the already guaranteed NIL money.

I haven’t heard anything confirmed on any of our players, but - if he had portaled and courted offers, I think Alex would be somewhere around $2 million. Darius Adams was rumored to be $1.5 million, but that feels high.

lol, Karaban’s legacy isn’t tarnished because some think he blocked UConn from getting some top tier replacement. If he decides not to come back, I’m sure he will be devastated that the 175 people who don’t know how to use social media think he’s a rat and are prepared to tell him so if he ever steps into their retirement village.
Sounds like you resent "mature" people. Two things you might want to do:
Offer examples of the alleged inept use of social media and why they're relevant; and
Take a break from maximizing your social media credentials and focus on just how wrong your assumptions might be.

If Alex doesn't come back then we will need a more impactful 4 who could play 5 but be a backup. I'm not sure who is out there besides the ones mentioned before Baba, Ohio St. Forward and the PItt F/C. Too bad the Quinnipiac guy isn't out there anymore. He would be a great backup 4 thought a little too small for a backup 5. He was more a 3/4 than a 4/5.
The Quinnipiac guy would have been a great pickup, with or without Alex.

Technically today may not even be the day a final-final decision/result is reached as he could submit his name today and then has until June 15th to withdraw.

Yes, I realize he has said he wants to make a go/no-go decision and rip the bandaid off or not but you don't know until you know.

Today should be the deadline regardless. There’s not really any need for him to test the waters again, we know exactly what he is. A mid to late second round pick, somewhere between 35-50. There’s nothing that changes that at this point. The staff should move forward accordingly after today, there’s no: let’s wait and see how it all shakes out again, they can’t wait until June to make the most essential roster decision here. Whatever the decision is today, that should be treated as final & move accordingly.

Yeah, I get all that. But there's obviously likely multiple factors at play such as specific conversations with multiple NBA teams, UConn's likely sweetening of his NIL bag, etc. That said, he's still obviously on the fence.

You are correct. If AK honestly doesn't know the answer, he can extend the clock.

This is getting a little absurd at this point. Have to imagine something got screwed up behind the scenes - not on UConn’s part but on the part of the Agent / desired answer of the NBA

Karaban doesn’t decide today…if? Hurley has to sign someone right?

If Karaban doesn't decide today then he isn't going into the NBA draft. Then we don't need a replacement for Alex. Tecnically he only needs to declare for the draft today. He doesn't even need to tweet he is staying at UConn since the Transfer Portal is closed too so he would have no other options. It is looking more and more likely he won't say anything. I mean it is almost 4 PM on deadline day.

AK can also transfer, and the transfer portal deadline rules don’t apply to him, as he would be a graduate transfer.

It does look like Navery is right when he said the rule changed. They still have to entered in by the last day of the transfer window but they can enter the portal at anytime during the academic year.

"Graduate transfers can enter the portal at any time during the academic year, but must be entered by the final day of the transfer window, according to the NCAA [1, 2, 15]."

Either way Alex isn't transferring to another school as he bleeds Husky Blue and White.
