did I hear that right? Donny thinks this year's team is more athletic? Seems to be the opposite of what many on this board think

awesome! i missed this live.

a fun, doesn't-really-matter subplot to watch during this season will be how close karaban gets to joining the elusive 50-40-90 club. currently at 53-40-88.
I had to google that...didn't know it was a thing...quite impressive if he pulls it off

For anyone wondering what that club is: 53% field goals, 40% 3 pt pct, 88% free throws

thanks! i should have been more clear.

only 11 college players have made it in since 1992. there are also only 11 pros in the club. it's a shockingly difficult mark to hit -- even ray never came all that close.

Ray in college or pros? In college his FT% was too low, .779 over 3 years. In the NBA his career averages are .452, .400, .894. He came close many times, so many times that his career average almost hits the mark. He just never reached .500 in FG% because almost half of his shots were 3's. It's one of those grab three arbitrary numbers type of things. In 2009 he was .480, .409, .952. That's about as close as you can get and .952 from the stripe! That package is even better.

Random stat observation I found just now: Steve Kerr shot 57.3% from 3 his final year in college (the first year the NCAA introduced the 3 point shot). That's absolutely unreal.

We lost Sanogo Jackson Alleyne and Joey but gained Castle Johnson Ball and Cam. I would say we are more athletic than last year’s team.

yeah, i mean, obviously he was the greatest shooter of all time. but the thing is that 2% across 82 games is dozens of missed shots. to me, a close miss is someone like khris middleton in 2020, who shot 49.7/41.3/91.6.

i think late-career ray was hurt by the fact that too many of his shots were threes and other jumpers, and it's basically impossible to 50% on threes at a high volume.

2% = 20 shots out of 1,040 taken. It is what it is but he hit 48 instead of 50 for every hundred he took. Yet he still shot over 40% from three that year. Crazy shooter.

Such a great pass from TN
Newton had 2 guys guarding him and rather than get trapped or dump it off to Diarra he found Karaban without getting it picked off. Great pass. It seems there is so much motion with Hurley's offense compared to past teams.

Really high IQ play by Newton. Notice what he does. He has two Nova players (Dixon and Moore) off of the pick and roll with Clingan. Tyler Burton, who was guarding Karaban on the wing, along with Longino defending Diarra, have to drop near the basket to defend against a possible lob to Clingan. When Newton picks up his dribble he looks at Diarra to make Longino sprint out to Diarra, but in doing so it opens a passing lane behind him to Karaban for the 3. Newton knew Tyler Burton would be late getting out to Karaban. If Newton tries to pass to Karaban immediately without looking at Diarra, that pass would get intercepted by Longino or at best Karaban gets the ball with no shooting space between him and Longino.

We have an interesting team with Guy smart enough and talented enough to make the right passes at the right time, but you have to give the coaching staff credit for the spacing and movement on our sets. It is really beautiful basketball.

He has future coach written all over him when his playing days are over.
This would not be surprising.

I watch him when the team huddles and he seems to communicate well and make his points without excess emotion. His teammates seem to respect him and listen attentively. The mutuality from the interaction looks good to me.

If he coaches after a stint in the pros, all the better.
