2027 Recruiting: Kaleena Smith

Candace Parker and Adidas just signed her to a big contract despite her young age. I wonder if there is a no UConn commitment clause in that contract because Candace investing so much time and energy on her for her to end up in Storrs would be one of the tastiest dishes of irony in all of history.
 
Special K lit it up against Etiwanda and LSU bound Grace Knox. Sidney Douglas also looked pretty good offensively but with a lot of work to do on defense.

Yeah, very impressed with Griffin. Physically strong, aggressive, skilled, and can play off either one or two feet which not a lot of HS kids can do. Constantly on the attack, she's going to be a load and probably one of the 3-5 best HS players in the country very soon regardless of class.

I watched Kaleena play on Friday. Despite her stature, she's the closest thing to a female Jason Kidd I've ever seen...

I had a perfect viewing angle on one of her passes... Right behind her, but 5 feet above her head in the stands as she fired a pass right past several players and riiiiight into the hands of a cutting teammate for an easy score. I was like; "How the HELL did she SEE that!??" and I'm thinking those sitting lower in front of me were thinking she'd just tossed it into a crowd.

Overall: 25 points, 10 of 14 shooting, 4 of 8 behind the arc. 7 assists including the dazzler I just described, 7 steals, 3 rebounds, 0 turnovers.

Sad thing about Saturday's rematch win over Mitty on Saturday: Archbishop Mitty's superstar junior forward McKenna Woliczko went down in the 2nd quarter with what looks like a pretty bad knee injury.
 
Oh, I should also point out that the game I saw Kaleena play was against Arizona's #2 team, definitely NOT chopped liver.

Further: Kaleena's quick, strong, accurate hands... Several times, an opposing player would have the ball in both hands, then Kaleena would appear, then go... Suddenly, other player has no basketball. I saw Jason Kidd do this a LOT in high school.

I can't remember a PG, regardless of HS class, who had Smith's level of poise, court vision, ballhandling, and ability to manipulate both her offense and the defense to play the game at whatever pace she wants. She sees everything on the court almost in advance of the play. Plus she's an excellent shooter on 3s and can manufacture shots going to the rim. Imagine her at 5-10 or so? Obviously the speed and physicality of the college game will be huge adjustments but the very best (Moore, Taurasi etc.) talents are able to make them. She'll be amazing to watch if she can. BTW, she plays against Vukosa and CTK HS at 3 pm today.

An update on today's Ontario (87) vs CTK (75) game. Auriemma was there to see Smith get 26 pts, 12 assists, 5 steals and win game MVP. Her teammate Tatianna Griffin, a freshman, also knocked in 26. Vukosa had no problem with Bean Douglas, as she went for 25 pts and 9 reb.
