Agreed but you’re missing the point. The show was about the brainchild inception of a Big East from Dave Gavitt and how he collectively brought the northeast power schools to form a new league. I’m not injecting any UConn bias here on whether we’re were disadvantaged or snubbed.

Losing to Duke was an accomplishment? Not the big east title or beating Syracuse and Gtown. Getting a 1 seed and achieving our highest rank in school history. I think those things are accomplishments. Losing to duke is just losing to duke like we had done back in the 70s. Where did i mention us being disrespected exactly?

Well, it should have just been titled requiem for Cuse and Georgetown because those are what died that day. The Big East has as many NC’s since then as Syracuse has field of 64 appearances.

I’ve stated this before but Pitt and Syracuse announcing the move to the ACC on the day Dave Gavitt died has cursed those programs.

For the OG fans: I thought the Big East wasn't really THAT good in the 90s? And that UConn in '99 ended a championship drought?

I wasn't around them. So I'm genuinely asking. Was the league considered Elite during the early and mid 90s?

2010s was easily to Nova. I don't think anyone in their right mind would debate that. UConn won 2 titles in the 2010s, but only 1 of them was in the Big East. The 2011 championship was a storybook season with story lines of Kemba becoming the timeless legend of college basketball, winning the BET by winning 5 games and 5 nights, and that team being 14-0 tournament style games. The Nova teams of 2016 and 2018 were simply stellar and pristine.

Yes. You had UConn regularly ranked in the top 5, but there were also the stars of the league in that period.

Ray Allen, Rip Hamilton Donyell Marshall and others from UConn. But you also had Alonzo Mourning bridging the 80s and 90s, Kerry Kittles and of course Allen Iverson. '96 Syracuse was in the national championship game. '91 St John's, UConn and Seton Hall all made a run. BC in '94, G'town and Syracuse in '96, Providence in '91, West Virginia in '98, St John's in '99. It wasn't at 80s level but it was up there in star power and expectations.
 
Yeah, that was a good 30 for 30 —came out a while ago - when the big east was king - nothing better to get you through a Monday after nfl ended during those dead days of January and February and watching “big Monday” on ESPN -,always a classic Big East matchup. Ewing , moten, kittles ray ray , mullin, pearl rony seikaly , Eric Murdock , shamgod, terry dehere, Dana barrows - I cud go on and on —- damn I literally was like 8-9 yrs old back then and grew up watching all those greats. So thankful I grew up at that time. Just watching sports and playing sports all day no matter the season. Amazing how much the college landscape has changed. So crazy. Conference realignment still blows my mind. UCLA in big 10? Cuse and Pitt and BC in ACC? Wild. At least I got the memories.

Oh yeah. The big east was loaded in the 90s. As was southern New England basketball -,especially in the mid to late 90s where you had Providence URI BC Uconn and UMass all legitimate. I think they all made it to at least elite 8 once in span from 95-98. Sick times

First writing a "requiem" for something that you tried, but failed to kill is the height of hubris. Basically ESPN is saying this conference is now dead. That 30 for 30 was an attempt at a coup de grâce, finishing the job they had tried to do by sponsoring multiple conference raids.

But let's set that aside, if you're going to do a documentary on the big east maybe you need to include the team that has both the most conference regular season and tournament championships.
Connecticut has eight tournament championships time, Georgetown. Here's the details:
  • Georgetown - 8 (1980, 1982, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1989, 2007, 2021)
  • UConn - 8 (1990, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2004, 2011, 2024)
  • Villanova - 6 (1995, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022)
  • Syracuse - 5 (1981, 1988, 1992, 2005, 2006)
  • St. John's - 4 (1983, 1986, 2000, 2025)
  • Louisville - 3 (2009, 2012, 2013)
  • Seton Hall - 3 (1991, 1993, 2016)
  • Boston College - 2 (1997, 2001)
  • Pittsburgh - 2 (2003, 2008)
  • Providence - 2 (1994, 2014)
  • Marquette - 1 (2023)
  • West Virginia - 1 (2010)
 
Connecticut also has 11 regular season championships, tying it with Villanova, not withstanding the fact that it played seven less years. In fact, five of those Villanova championships were earned before Connecticut joined the conference that was spun off by the C7 and purchased the name "the big east".

Bottom line, that documentary is trying to tell a story that the big east was once great, but "died" attempting to pursue football relevance. The fact that Connecticut was the winningest program, and continued to be a power in college basketball was an "inconvenient truth" and thus conveniently ignored for the purpose of that documentary.

This place really is unreal - you can't even compliment other programs without some nancy finding it offensive. And then you are labeled "exhausting" for doing so. When what is exhausting is the insane sensitivity to anything that is even perceived as anti Uconn, when it's not the intent at all.

Uconn was an afterthought in the true heyday of the BE (the 80s), absolutely has been it's best team from the 90s through today outside the AAC run where Villanova filled in the blanks.

I wasn’t referring to you. I apologize. Elsewhere where calling Dusty May a visionary in terms of his two big offense was seen as an anti-Christ view.

I'm just confused by your post since you seem to be agreeing with the pushback against Mr. Fear the Pups. I'm just saying that at this point the constant attacks against you have created a situation where you have knee-jerk reactions to a pile-on like this one. Which is understandable, I guess.

In general, I think 25 years of Calhoun have prepared me for (and innoculated me against any criticism of) Danny Hurley. I understand some UConn fans have soured on the antics, but given the Calhoun years, it certainly is perplexing.

For good or bad, UConn has had the most sustained leadership by irascible coaches in all of college basketball.

I’m not as negative towards you as others even though I think I remember you defending Zanetto at one point but is he really a visionary when Phi Slamma Jamma and Hoya Paranoia already successfully implemented double bigs years ago? I assume the difference is usage as Akeem, Ralph x2, Ewing, Mourning, Dik Mutumbo, were more post up players. I haven’t watched much Michigan.

Calhoun to Hurley has been an ideal pivot. Hurley is not perfect but we are incredibly lucky to have him, his flaws built around passion and loyalty.

Way too little UConn footage in that doc. And one can only take so much boeheim & thompson.
