All season long people talked about UCONNs depth!
How it could hurt them and 8 is not enough!!

It was the subject of many threads this season!

So let the record show that UCONN needed just 6 players to dominate the FF!

6!!!!
And while a deep bench is always nice it's just another reason to always put your faith in GA, the assistants, and the team we root for every single day!!

Congrats ladies!!!

Your hard work paid off!!

Title #9

Go UCONN!!!!

Well said. Reminds me of Geno's conversation about his drills: 3 vs 5 and 5 vs 8. Thus, to UCONN, pressure is the norm. To their opponent, pressure is intense. Come on! Moriah Jefferson was more relentless the entire game than Jewell Lloyd's effort to cover Stewie in the second half. UCONN rules.

The issue was always one thing. Would the team stay healthy. They did. Nuf' said.

....and that takes a little luck, but who wants to base their success on luck?

Depth comes into play in a long 30+ game season. If you only play 6 players the entire season, they will, no matter HOW well conditioned they are, wear down at just the most important time of the year: tournament time. You can, however pare the rotation down to 6 or 7 during the tournament, and have a great deal of success, ala UConn this year.

Well I would disagree. Tuck was out for most of the year. KML was out quite a bit too. Jefferson was in a boot towards the end of the season. We weren't overly healthy.

I wonder to what degree the team's 3 point shooting falling off was due to wear and tear; I saw little evidence that the opposing team's defense contributed to that.

It's often been said that playing the games is the easy part. Whether there are 8 or 15 on the roster, each player is doing the same amount of work in practice and is almost equally susceptible to injury. The dilemma is that with a large roster, many players don't get much chance to have the fun of playing in games. That might make it more difficult on average to put fourth energy in practice to the detriment of the team. Plus, if a key player goes down, you're not much better off you have a large roster of lesser skilled players. It's a dilemma that probably can't be solved. Geno seems to prefer to take the risk of having a smaller roster.

With a deep bench we would have used the full court press much more often. Can't imagine how many fewer points we would have given up had we been able to do so. I too think that at the end of the season, the weary legs might have affected our 3 point shooting a bit.

It wasn't just injuries that were a worry. There was always a concern that against a team that took it at you and got players in foul trouble with particular ease (especially like ND seems to do) that we could have some of our starters on the bench for significant time while they would be able to make headway vs the reserves. I was cringing when I saw Dee Kantner as one of the officials but the game was called very loosely and they let the players play. Foul shots were not the story of this game.
