Just a Couple of Nagging Championship Points

These thoughts haven't gone away so I thought I'd chuck them at the Boneyard and be rid of them.

Fulwiley: Obviously a ton of talent, but I'm not sure the head matches the body. On several occasions when she scored she tried to engage her defender as she skipped back up court. Deep into the game KK gave her some back. If my team is down 20 I'm not doing that and frankly if we are up 20 I'm not doing that. Frankly I think Dawn didn't trust her which is why she did not start. She's found the right spot because Mulkey will put up with her nonsense.

Championship Attendance: There were some high angle arena shots that revealed a pretty fair number of a patchwork of empty seats blocks. I would suppose these were paid seats of high seed losers. I don't understand coming to Tampa and not sticking around for some great basketball even if your team lost. It tends to confirm what I have long suspected. There are many fans who are not basketball fans, they are university sport fans.

Same for the kiosk selling NCAA stuff on each level. Simply put, I suspect many of the empty seats you saw were a result of people standing in lines elsewhere.

I concur on your Fulwiley assessment.

That gives me some comfort. While UConn's crushing of South Carolina's 71 home court win streak could give anyone pause the championship match up was pitting the best against the best making it very much the game of the year; a game not to be missed.

I went to the 2018 and 2019 Final Fours. Had an empty feeling walking into the ND-Mississippi State and the Baylor-ND games, but went nonetheless, wearing my UConn hat and jersey. They both turned out to be very exciting games and I am glad I went. I remember feeling horrible for the MissSt fans sitting near me in 2018, I thought they got robbed on the no call against Morgan William. Also remember feeling happy for the result in 2019.

My ears perked up when the ESPN commentators noted that Fulwiley essentially had a personal coach at South Carolina who had known her since the fifth grade and who spoke to her whenever she came out of a game, etc. That seems like a huge red flag to me, screaming high maintenance. On the defensive end she was testing what little patience Dawn had left in the second half.

Nevertheless, she is an amazing shotmaker and will probably go for 30+ many times for LSU.

I wouldn’t be so hard on Fulwiley, considering that Paige is one of the most demonstrative players I’ve ever seen with her combination of playing to the crowd, flexing, primal screams and yelling “and xxxxxxx one” after getting fouled while scoring. Of course Paige is one of the very best players on the planet. Fulwiley is still a work in progress.

You do realize that you are on the Boneyard where we comment on just about anything whether it’s relevant, irrelevant or completely nonsensical. In short, it’s what we do, particularly during the offseason. If a subject does not interest someone, they always have the option of ignoring it or starting a new thread on a topic they are interested in. For instance, someone could start a thread on which 5 players will be starting next season…….

Kids are a lot different today vs when you and I grew up. When I was playing ball, it would never have occurred to me to put on a show after scoring a basket, TD or hitting a home run. But we never had social media and lucrative NIL contracts. As Dylan would say, “Oh the times they are a changing.”

I’ve always loved watching Milaysia. What an incredible athlete. As Geno might say, she’s not really “a basketball player” but her physical talents are awesome.

I still remember watching video from her first college game, SC vs ND, held in Paris. It quickly turned into the Milaysia & Hannah show and probably revealed a lot about both of them. They are chaos creators, both of them, and mostly they create it for the other team, not their own.

Geno also likes having chaos creators on his roster. But the difference is he teaches his how to play with discipline. The ‘Havoc Twins,’ KK and Ash are just the latest example, and even though they may not be as talented on offense, I wouldn’t trade them for Hannah and Milaysia.

I happen to generally like Kim - despite her antics (which are quite entertaining), she certainly has shown consistently that she can put very good teams on the floor, both before and during the portal era.

I realize this might be pyscho-babble on my part but given how much energy Kim puts into the portal, I sometimes get the feeling that she's looking forward down the road as much as she's in the present moment.

If this is the case, does she have the energy, time and patience to really mentor Milaysia into reaching her full potential?

I went to the Final Four with my brothers when it was held in Nashville. We wore our Husky gear and never heard any negativity from Tennessee fans, some of whom were in attendance even though the Lady Vols weren't playing.
