Vaccine

Johnson & Johnson said Monday it could have a Covid-19 vaccine available for emergency use early next year and it would begin manufacturing the vaccine immediately.

Though not a major vaccine maker, Johnson & Johnson (ticker: JNJ) was among the first companies to announce a Covid-19 vaccine development program back in January. Now, the company said its program has developed a candidate vaccine and two backup candidates. It plans to begin testing the vaccine in humans in September.

Johnson & Johnson said it planned to make the vaccine available “on a not-for-profit basis.”

Anyone see the company from Shelton that has the Venus fly trap for corona? Article I read said they are running into some possible fda approval trouble, article also said that since it’s a treatment and not a vaccine it could be ready a lot sooner

Government should throw out crazy cash $50-$100 billion (or more) for the fastest vaccine possible. You put enough money into it, and they could get it out a lot quicker. Sounds like a lot, but It's a lot less than $2 trillion dollars.

A lot of the time comes down to testing... Money can only speed that up so much.

Precisely. We still need to go through multiple phases of human trials to make sure that the vaccine is safe and doesn't do damage (we rushed a vaccine to a flu scare in '76 -- it turned out to cause Guillain-Barre in a small fraction of patients).

What money can do is invest in scaling the production of several vaccine candidates while human trials are ongoing, knowing that the majority of them will be duds. Bill Gates talked about it last night on the Daily Show:

A vaccine will NOT help in 2020.

They should be thowing billions and the kitchen sink at treatments.

There’s no proven drug for this new virus so anything you give people will actually kill them. Don’t you watch the news?

The vaccine will help in 2020 if it works. The trial will be worldwide in developed countries and developing and will be conducted in frontline medical workers. We will know soon enough if the vaccine works if it keeps healthcare workers from getting sick. The Pitt vaccine looks interesting as does Moderna's but J&J has the chops to take the risk on manufacturing a billion vaccines without knowing whether it works. They are a great company.

The docs have been prescribing hydroxychloroquine, Z pack and various antivirals for the last month. While the data aren't published yet, I think they have a good idea that there may be some efficacy

Working on one doesn't mutually exclude working on the other. We need both. We cannot open back up for business until we have a vaccine, a rapid test to know who does and doesn't have Covid and some understanding of whether having had Covid gives you immunity to reinfection.

Coronavirus breakthrough as scientists discover a drug used to treat HEAD LICE can kill COVID-19 cells

An anti-parasitic head lice drug available around the world has been found to kill COVID-19 in the lab within 48 hours.

A Monash University-led study has shown a single dose of the drug Ivermectin could stop the SARS-CoV-2 virus growing in cell culture.

'We found that even a single dose could essentially remove all viral RNA (effectively removed all genetic material of the virus) by 48 hours and that even at 24 hours there was a really significant reduction in it,' Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute's Dr Kylie Wagstaff said on Friday.

The next step is for scientists to determine the correct human dosage, to make sure the level used in vitro is safe for humans.

'In times when we're having a global pandemic and there isn't an approved treatment, if we had a compound that was already available around the world then that might help people sooner,' Dr Wagstaff said.

'Realistically it's going to be a while before a vaccine is broadly available.'

Scientists expect it could be at least a month before human trials.

Before Ivermectin can be used to combat coronavirus, funding is needed to get it to pre-clinical testing and clinical trials.

Ivermectin is an FDA-approved anti-parasitic drug also shown to be effective in vitro against viruses including HIV, dengue and influenza.

And what is the threshold for knowing we have a vaccine?
