Got to believe there was pressure from the Big East presidents, lets see who they hire. This is positive news from our standpoint.

Perfect post-coaching job for JC to roll in to.

The history of the Big East is a classic example of a three-generation family that keeps handing over the family business to the oldest son ... without considering a talented outsider who's more knowledgable about what's happening in the industry. Patriarch Dave Gavitt was a visionary when he founded the Big East 30-plus years ago, marrying it perfectly with the young ESPN.

However, when it became clear that football was driving the intercollegiate bus, the guys from the Providence family were not capable of dealing with the new landscape. They were too rooted in the past and the idea of basketball-only schools. As a result, twice in a row, the Providence fathers (no pun intended) kept putting more of their own sons at the reins.

Tranghese and Marinatto are both nice guys. They were just wrong for the job.

Absolutely right on the money. It's pretty clear that Marinatto was more of a second banana than a Commissioner from the outset. He didn't have the respect of the conference leadership as was evidenced by the way Syracuse & Pitt announced their leaving...while he was at an ACC stadium! then their comments about playing the ACC tourney in Madison Square Garden...and all this while Pitt's president was Chairman of the Big East...On top of htat the football schools outright rejection of Villanova, which Marinatto had pushed for months. Tranghese has made it abundantly clear that he was a basketball guy and really has no use for football. I suspect in his heart of hearts Marinatto feels the same way.

Well let's think about that a second... a new charismatic leader, huge territorial expansions, an influx of Germans to UConn...

Yeah you’re right. It's probably not a good idea.

more instability...swell.

Disagree. With the right hire, this is an opportunity for the Big East to give notice that it wants a seat at the grown up table.

This is huge.

Not to diss any BE schools, especially the Catholic hoops only schools, but my hope is the presidents appoint someone from the outside who will be fair equally, to the hoops only, and football also, schools.
Who votes, and who doesn't??? Hopefully Syracuse & Pitt don't get a vote. But does C. Fla, SMU, Houston, S.D. State, Navy, and Boise ST. get to vote?

That eliminates the "He Said We Said" drama when NBC offers $8 mil per football school tops

It's been a while since I read the BE bylaws (sigh... yes, I am that lame)... but if I remember correctly, Cuse and Pitt no longer have a say in BE matters. I believe only full members (ie, no football-only schools such as Boise State) have a voting say in league-wide BE matters going forward. Schools that are not yet full members would not have a vote. I believe Boise State, when they join, would have a say in football matters only.

Sorry if my memory is a bit fuzzy.

the BE is a complete cluster duck* right now with teams as far away as California and Texas. the BE in the past was more interested in keeping the non FB schools happy as well, which has helped screw over the remaining FB schools. but i partly blame the football schools for not pressuring the BE more, or doing something to change. i'm not sure in hindsight what they could have done, but breaking away at the beginning would have been a good start.

and even if they didn't do that, once the FB schools got a majority in the conference, they should have forced the BE to do things in their best interest. the hoops only schools certainly had the BE dancing to their tune for the duration.

Possibly there was some pressure for whatever reason. I don't understand (1.) how he gets to jerk this league around and turn it into a mish-mosh of schools that have no connection with one another and schools who have great Eastern basketball history(who made the Big East what it was) and just walk away and (2.) how can we possibly accept a commissioner who will be voted on by schools that (a.) we have absolutely no history,(B.) that have no sensitivity to what this league was and (c.) have not played a minute in any Big East sport much less basketball. I don't see this as an opportunity. It is a travesty! I honestly think, and I had mixed feelings to this point, that this is the last straw for UConn; and we should be aggressively be looking to move. Unfortunately, it is, apparently, way to late for that. This is a real kick in the teeth....a freakin' disgrace!!!

1. It seems that the league kicked him out,not the other way around. The mish-mosh was the result of the original members bolting for the door as quickly as possible. BC, Miami, VaTech, Syracuse, Pitt, West Virginia all gone. UCONN and Rutgers would go too if they can make the deal. Same with Lousiville, South florida and cincy...
2. Accepting commissioners who were simply too tied to the Big East's history is one of the factors that got the conference to this place. Fact is that the world has changed since 1979 and a basketball league is never ever going to be anything more than 2nd fiddle to the major football conferences. Had we selected a comissioner with a football, or even a non-Big East background when Tranghese stepped down, whoo knows what would have happened...it wouldn't have been worse, that's for sure. Of course if you want to keep up the Providence College connection, I'm sure Bob Driscoll would be available...

Follow the money.
That September TV deal will determine whether the BE remains viable in any way, shape, or form.
If no one wants to pay top dollar for the new hybrid BE, then the only alternative will be a ftball/bball split.
Inevitable.

Tranghese and Marinatto are both nice guys. They were just wrong for the job.

And Jeff Hathaway was a nice guy who was wrong for the UConn AD job, yet you thought he was the one being wronged by being fired.

Not sure what that has to do with the Marinatto situation. Marinatto was the wrong guy for the job. He didn't have the confidence of the football schools and apparently lost the ocnfidence of the basketball schools.
