.......... Joe D is the man though...
When is Wayno?
"Touchdown Connecticut" is classic!I like Joe D. I was a fan for a decade where the radio was the only outlet for many games. Nothing better than hearing him say two things:
Touchdown Connecticut and The First Varsity Touchdown For ...
My measure of all broadcasters is how they compare to Chuck Kaiton. IMO, most cant hold his ! That man could make you feel like you were at the Montreal Forum or Boston Garden w/ out ever seeing a hockey game ever! We were blessed here in CT to have one of the greatest ever to sit in a booth for decades calling games for the Whale. We just didn't know it at the time..... These clowns around here are just that.....
I'm pretty sure many knew how awesome Chuck was at the time.
If you want to bang your head against the wall on a broadcaster change... John Forsland replacing Rick Peckham? Hey hey whadda say is the opposite of Touchdown Connecticut.
I agree for those who were aware at the time, but not sure many remember what a gem he truly was. I remember staying up til after midnight just to listen to him call the west coast games against the Kings, Oilers etc... All the while knowing I had to wake up at 4:45am to get to the rink on the weekends for hockey practice. Rick Peckham!!! Wow, that's a name that I had almost erased from my memory banks. Didn't he go on to call the plays for Tampa Bay?
Nelson Emerson "big ones" (waquoit's joke) got pounded/knocked out trying to cross the blue line. While play was stopped so that Emerson could wake up, the camera was on The other teams bench (cannot remember who) where players where laughing, to which Forslund summoned his inner Ted Baxter and said "that's not funny puppy!"I'm pretty sure many knew how awesome Chuck was at the time.

I didn't mind Reaugh but he was no Cheevers.
You have to go back a while to have a soft spot for Andre Laquoix. "You know Chuck... The Whalers look like they are skating in cee-ment"
So in the course of my college internship I worked at WILI and a good part of what I did was board op Whalers games.
If you liked Chuck on the air you would have loved his commentary that wasn't broadcast.
I remember Jason Muzzatti was starting one night and Chuck's comment watching warm-ups was: I hope this kid is saving as much money as he can, because this isn't going to last long.
