>>“You get back to the parking lot on campus and everybody’s hugging,” Penders said, “and nobody wants it to end. Nobody wants to go their own separate ways. It’s just so abrupt. With spring sports, it ends – and everybody’s gone.”<<

>>“The end is sudden, it’s hard, it’s raw,” Penders said, “but then you’re uplifted when kids are drafted.”<<

>>“I think the kids maximized their abilities,” he said. “I think we could have won one more. … At the end of the day, I’m really proud of the way they fought, and that’s what I’ve been hearing from a lot of our alums, they fight, they fought, they fight. That’s all we talked about all week, when our backs are to the wall, how to we fight?”<<

They showed a lot of character and resiliency after the Cincinnati gut punch. The 2019 version of the UConn Baseball Huskies can indeed hold their heads high. Best to all of them.

Penders gets kids who some will be have a minor league career, others nothing and a few future MLBers and turns them into a team that competes in the NCAA's most years. And did that with non existent facilities in today's age. Character and resiliency are just 2 of the superlatives this program and team deserve.
