Jim Fuller on UConn Guards vs ND Guards

Perimeter defense was really really tough, though more on keeping ND from hitting a lot of mid-range jumpers and driving too quickly inside so that Stewie could dominate. Doubt that it was ever likely that ND would go completely away from their season's game and shoot many more than the 11 threes they took. They aren't a bad shooting 3s team, but that's partly because they don't take contested 3s. But 7-30 shooting from the two main Irish guards -- MoJeff and Nurse can be extraordinarily proud, plus thankful for some long arms behind them.

seems like they only liked to shoot NBA 3s...

If you drop Mabrey's 3-5 out of the equation (and she really plays more of a wing position) the rest of the guards shot 8-36 for 22.2% in the game and as importantly only got 8 foul shots in the game (8-8) Allen and Loyd were a combined 7-30 (23.3%) with 6 foul shots. It was a defensive struggle for both teams and Mo and Kia were well below their season averages at 9-25 with 2-2 from the foul line, but 36% is significantly more efficient. Interesting the actual scoring was pretty comparable - Mo/Kia 24, Allen/Loyd 20. The minutes - Allen and Moriah didn't leave the floor, Loyd played 38, Kia 28 as Stokes and Gabby spent most of their time replacing Kia as Uconn went big.

And for bigs - Reimer and Westbeld were non-factors on offense: 3-13. The only two players that were efficient for ND were Turner and Mabrey

Geno had recruited Reimer, Westbeld and Mabrey. Missed on all three so got stuck with the likes of Tuck. Jefferson and Nurse.:D

I love Nurse, Tuck but I am crazy about the little Jefferson!!!

I still wish we had landed Turner.... That girl is going to be good....
Agree! Her future is def brighter than Williams from Duke. Really impressed that she dropped that last second shot from high post. Many freshmen would either just pass it out like a hot potato in hand or aimlessly throw it up.

It looked like a prayer off the glass, but it counted.

I was proud of Notre Dame's front court. Turner defended Stewart really well and Taya showed a lot more compared to the December game. Going into the game my biggest concern was the post battle and surprisingly the guards were Notre Dame's downfall not the bigs. ND just lacks another guard that can create their own shot. Next year should be fun
