I rewatched the 1995 championship game against Tennessee this afternoon. One thing that struck me is how Jen Rizzotti played in that game and what she set in motion. If UConn played with a fast pace back then, it was entirely because of her. No one has ever packed more energy and intensity into 5’5” than she did. She occasionally played out of control. But what she mainly did was keep Tennessee back on their heels, since any mistake they might make on offense, any missed pass, any long rebound could turn into a fast break in an instant.

Jen’s stat line for the game was 15 pts on 6-8 shooting, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, 3 assists and 4 turnovers and it shows the full picture. Others who followed in her footsteps may have had better numbers in one category or another, but she set the standard for the signature intensity Geno has expected from his guards ever since. And it has been a storied tradition with figures like Sue and Renee and Diana and MoJeff and Kia and Crystal and Nika to name just a few of the great ones.

When I look at the current team, I can’t help comparing KK and Ash to Jen. They bring a similar intensity to the game and we have all marveled at it. But maybe even more than them, Kayleigh seems like a closer approximation to what Jen brought to the game. She loves to push pace, to drive the lane, shoot the pop-up midrange jumper. She scraps for loose balls, and hurls herself into every scrum. She is fearless in everything she does. And she also plays out of control occasionally.

More than any other plays, the pair of length of the court drives Kayleigh used to break Tennessee’s back earlier this season was really reminiscent of what Jen did to another Tennessee team in the closing minutes of that first NC game. If she can continue to channel Jen’s intensity, the future looks bright for Kayleigh and her teammates.

Geno really has had a string of phenomenal PGs - don't really know about pre-1993 but:
Jen (1 NPOY)
Rita Williams (oft forgotten) transfer and a demon defender.
Sue (1 NPOY, 3 Lieberman)
Maria (short but slow) Conlon
Nicole Wolff derailed by injuries
Mel Thomas (our linebacker)
Renee (1 L)
Carolina Doty also injury plagued
Bria Hartley (how tall is she!)
MoJeff (2 L)
Saniya Chong
Crystal Dangerfield
Nika Muhl
KK Arnold
Plus DT and Paige who won both NPOY and Nancy Lieberman's twice each while being something more than PGs.

Quite a list of players, and a lot of great basketball.

Don’t forget Ketia Swanier

It seems too soon to forget Kaitlyn Chen!
Not really a point guard more a shooting guard.
Nika Muhl?
Ooops - justed added her in - meant to list her as I was putting it together and just forgot.

Also left out all the point forwards through the years, and Big Stef our point center. And of course Gabby our point everything!

Really liked Ketia, but was she ever really our lead point guard, maybe? Why I also didn't yet list K9. Almost left Mel Thomas off as well for the same reason, but with Wolff going down she stepped up.

My favorite Rizzotti moment, and certainly one of the greatest ever in UConn lore, was shooing the Tennessee team off of the UConn half of the court pregame.

I think Nika has been probably the closest to that sort of intensity in the last 20 years.

Would Shea fit in this list?

One of the point forwards. Along with Sveta, Maya, Gabby and others.

Amazing (off topic fact): Sveta was a first team AA her senior year, and I suspect the only one ever to have only played her first 18.5 games before being lost for the whole second half of the season. And not just one team - she was first team for WBCA and USBWA and second team on the AP.

Ketia was the starting point guard as a freshman.

I will always visualize that oh so simple cross over move that was the beginning of the end for the Orange. A game the refs tried so hard to ruin made Jenn and Geno the happiest people on planet earth.

In a lineup of Jana, Sarah, Paige, Azzi and Kaitlyn I would understand Kaitlyn as the point guard.
