Terrific column by Jeff Jacobs on Kelly and her Dad whose timely phone call to Chris Dailey helped bring her to Storrs.

There would be interest from several colleges. Intent on Kelly making her own choice, Bob said at one point that she seemed stalled with indecision.

"She said, 'I haven't heard from UConn again,'" Bob said. So he called and talked to Chris Dailey.

"Chris had been led to believe by another coach that Kelly had made a decision to stay in state," Bob said. "She wanted to know if I was calling to say that was so."

On the contrary, Bob said, and the recruiting game was on. Kelly would sit with Auriemma in his office. They went to dinner at Nathan Hale Inn. Bob listened. Eventually a half-dozen candidates became Notre Dame and UConn.

"Kelly already had gone to bed one night," said Bob, who played football at the University of Indianapolis. "She came downstairs and said I've made my up mind. I didn't know what she was going to say next."

She said UConn.

"There were a lot of schools she could have gone to and contributed," Bob said. "I don't know that any of them would have been a better fit for her in her development as a player and person. The mind-set at UConn, the way they approach things, it's exactly us. It fits us like a glove."

I'm glad they made that call. :p
Me, too. She has been a joy to watch despite the braying of some who continually thought we couldn't afford her on the court because of a lack of offense. Kelly's game was always bigger and greater than some to acknowledge and this year she capped it off with a consistent 3 pt shot. Blessings Kelly in everything you do. If you pursue them with the same insight and dedication as you have basketball while at UCONN you will conquer every challenge.

Kelly was a class of one, can you imagine if that phone call had not been made!

it is always difficult when it comes time to say goodbye to our seniors. Kelly Faris, you are no exception; we are going to miss you.

Thank you so very much for deciding to come to play at UConn. It has been wonderful to follow your career... best of luck to you in the WNBA and beyond!!

I'd love to know who that coach was and his/her ties to any Indiana college programs.

So would I. But it's more revealing that UConn simply assumed that this coach knew what she was talking about.

I would think you would verify any such tips. Surely they have enough time to make a phone call to someone -- coach, family -- who could confirm the 'tip' -- or slimy trick.

If it wasn't a contact period they may have not been able to talk to the family. A player's coach is usually the one recruiters contact during quiet time. Since her coach was her father I am unsure if it was legal to ask him? But I also wondered why they took that person's word without verifying it.
