Jaylin Stewarts time has come

All of our players work within the offensive scheme with ball movement to get someone the best shot and we have the assists to show it but Stew is a good shooter and passer so to go to the next level he has to be more assertive and aggressive and get to the line. When Liam is out or on the bench resting.

I think Danny needs to stop with the “skittish” comments on Stewart. I don’t think that type of thing motivates him. Some guys need a kick in the butt while others need the pat on the back or words of encouragement. And if Stewart has played “skittish”, then what does that make Ross, or further back, Mahaney?
Ouch, you put Mahaney further away than Ross? That is a discouraging thought for a guy we might need to be counted on. Don't think we'll "need" Ross, but we might "need" Mahaney. In Mahaneys case, contingent on Nowells usage and development, Ross only if he has progressed towards Castle/Jackson type of stopper. So far, no signs that'll happen.

We need all of these guys for different roles. My observation is that Stewart might not respond well to Danny calling his play “skittish”, or by employing quick hooks when he makes a mistake (potentially making him play tighter). Danny gives more rope to players like Alex. While we would undoubtedly mostly agree that Alex has earned a lot of latitude, he’s made some plays recently that had Stewart made them, he’d have been yanked from the game. I believe that start gave Stew some much needed confidence, and his play reflected that.

Absolutely on the money. Hopefully Coach Hurley sees things the way you do. A growth in confidence for Jaylin will yield incredible dividends. Still don't think there is a role for Ross, not because he can't, but because he won't, if that makes sense. He can do it but won't do it, not sure if he is able to learn how to do "IT"

Listen I’m thrilled Danny is our coach. He’s forgotten more about basketball than I or any of us here know. I don’t want anyone else coaching this program. But he’s human. He’s made mistakes that he’s owned up to. I think starting Stew was a pivot towards potentially unlocking more potential in this team. Even after Liam is healthy, that growth and confidence in Stew will play dividends when he comes off the bench.

Highly dependent on who we play - and the game plan.

For Nova, without Liam we needed Stewart 1:1 on Dixon as best he could and he delivered.
For teams that are guard heavy, we'd see less Stewart and more Mahaney/Nowell
For teams that have a tall front court, we might see Reed, Jr., Johnson, AK with 2 guards.

It all depends - especially next year, if Liam is gone, and Stew stays he will be a starter.

When did he become a defensive stopper? All of a sudden out of nowhere in this game he's playing lock down D on one of the best scorers in the country. Honestly, where has that been? Was it just that he matched up well against this one player that has a unique combination of size strength and skills? He was incredible against him.
Jaylin played very good defense in the Nova game for sure. However, Dixon, as great of a player that he is now being the nation's leading scorer, he isn't really fast and quick driving to the hoop so Jaylin matched up better with him as opposed to someone that is fast and quick on dribble penetration. Jaylin's problem, as well as many other players on UConn except Hass, is lateral foot movement.

Hopefully Jaylin can build on his strong defensive performance (and solid offensive performance, too) and guard quicker and faster players. If he builds on both his offensive and defensive performance game by game, Hurley is correct. this team will be even stronger once Liam returns. I don't want to see an 0-fer from Jaylin next game against Georgetown. Georgetown has a lot of size and athleticism-Jaylin will be needed.

Hurley always favors defense wayyy above offense

Ross and Samson getting time over Stewart and Reed despite what we all see Stew and Reed do on offense would be solid examples
Samson while not a prolific scorer can get us points in different ways and has developed and inside game with some baby hooks. His problem is rebound which he will never be great due to his body type and being a little uncoordinated at times. He also gives us help D. Ross doesn't give us anything. I wouldn't necessarily group them in the same boat. I'm fine with Samson starting but eventually Reed getting more minutes. Reed can be slow on D at times too.

Samson often tries to corral a rebound with one hand as he is trying to hold off an opponent with the other. It is what it is. He is quick but slender and struggles to box out. I will be pissed if Dan forgets to play Stewart which he is apt to do with his substitution patterns. Stewart has the biggest upside of our bench players and he needs to be given lots of minutes. That kid can make things happen.

This feels like 2021-2022 season Hurley and New Mexico St.

He said he realized you can't win just on defense. Stewart brings so much more on offense than Ross and is a better rebounder and passer.

We're deep, only 5 guys can play and Hurley has a 200 minute time restriction

Everybody can play, everyone gets a chance, and we'll have different leaders on different days

Enjoy the ride people, and understand none of us know this team better than arguably the best coaching staff in the country

It’s on the staff to know the give night on all 3 of Stewie, Aidan and Ross. They’re all inconsistent so early on may tell you which is ready to impact and who is not. It would be nice for all 3 to show up for every game but for now it’s looks very unlikely.

How is he a "good shooter"? He's a career 27% three point shooter. I really like Jaylin and if/when he puts it together he can be a real factor. But he is incredibly inconsistent and the board's view of him as this scorer is bizarre to me. This year he has just as many games of 0 as he does of 10+.

I think he can be with more minutes more so than Ross but we have others taking the 3. He has great form on that shot. He also could make mid range, but the sample size is too small. JMO.

His form is nice and the sample size might be too small to say he is a bad shooter but we are getting closer. 66 career attempts from 3 and he's at 27%. It should be getting to the point where we're surprised he hits one as opposed to the converse.

I love the way he passes the ball and when he attacks the hoop with assertiveness. I think Ross is actually a better shooter but Ross is such a spazz that he tends to either rush everything or play with shocking hesitation. Jaylin's problem has been that he has been for the most part a really bad defensive player. He was excellent against Dixon for sure because he had the quickness advantage. But if you watch the GTown game, he gets beat off the dribble in 3 of the first 4 possessions, gets pulled, and he never recovered. Ross, while probably currently falling for a pump fake somewhere, has significantly more defensive potential, imo.

It's a good problem to have because both Jaylin and Ross have tons of talent. But both of their inability to play with any consistency is maddening. People keep on saying we have tons of depth, but the bench play has been so hit or miss that many games the bench (other than Tarris) is a net negative.

Its not just Stewie but AK, AM, Ross and a few others who are consistently being beat off the dribble. This has to be Dan Hurley's poorest defensive team in that area.

Was he beat on those 3 by a switch when he was first guarding a forward? At his size he’s not going to be able to guard a speedy 1 or 2.

My memory is was straight off the dribble. He got pulled very quickly.

Samson had one of his best games against G'town. He was active on both ends, he scored, rebounded, and blocked shots, he was a presence in the middle. He played a complete game. That's why Hurley gave him more 27 minutes to Reed's 12. Reed played a good game. He just needed to be more in the flow of the offense. He usually is. Our centers are dependent on those around them.just needs to be in the flow of the offense.

Jaylin Stewart should be starting I think... He showed enough last year (in BIG game situations) to warrant that much...

Some people have taken that to mean Hurley revamped his entire philosophy. I don't think that's true, he always knew you needed both. It's just that those early teams sucked on offense and he didn't want to throw them under the bus.

It generally starts to click for sophs around this time unless a guy's a bonehead or lacking in skills - that's not Stew. Given our complex offense and the learning curve on defense it's not surprising for a four star to have growing pains in some areas.

Stew was my favorite frosh last year from the start - so many ways to score at first glance. Since last November he's often shown the multiple ways he can impact a game leaving us salivating for more.

He looked so composed during the Dixon match-up - it was very relaxing to watch if you know what I mean.
While I wish he had some spin, his 3 ball is acceptable if not dependable. (I know, even Rashad had a flat ball and that worked out.) If the time gained from Liam's absence gives him more freedom to attack and get to the line, we'll be very happy.
Hey!!
