Jaylin Stewart staying put at UConn

Happy Stew is sticking around, he can develop into a really solid depth piece this year. Still hope we pursue a starting caliber wing, regardless of Karabans decision.

If not, the Stew/Mullins battle will be one to watch this off season.
I'm sure we will be looking for another athletic wing but I expect Stewart to start at SF. We need a bigger atletic wing at SG to back up Ball for a change of pace.

I expect Adams to mostly backup Ball. Kinda expect our offense to revolve around getting Ball/Mullins firing away from deep, and using that spacing to create sets for Reed to feast inside. Mullins would essentially need to start if this is true, and I think he'll be too good to bench anyways. Defense might struggle if Ball doesn't take a step forward, depending who our PG is, and how ready Mullins is on that end.

In my pre season questions Clingan’s ability to go from 12 minutes a game to 25 minutes a game is certainly a ligitmate question..in fact anyone not having that as a question really doesn’t know much about basketball. Big guys tire, tired guys foul , and guy who fouls sit . We certainly didn’t want him sitting. Keeping him on the floor was critical to the NC as he changed the defense entirely .
Given he was gifted in footwork ,size , and hands that was the only real question about him.
I can’t remember anyone questioning Castle defending and defense is a thing I pay attention to more than most . I did question our team defense which looked horrible for a stretch when Clingan was hurt .in the absence of a rim protector team defense is only as strong as its weakest link which was never castle.
Castle was pretty much the last option on offense and our opponents sometimes used his man to double a shooter.. that’s simply a fact He made them pay thankfully . I saw his first game ever as a Huskie and commented that he amazingly sees the game in slow motion which gives him multiple options mostly in delivering the ball or finishing at the hoop but he was never a greater shooter at UConn although his other skills allowed him to create his own shot.
Very natural to question those things. No doubt. But we have to defer to the staff and not give definite comments that outwardly suggest that some of these guys should be recruited over- portal transfers are riskier than guys who know the system, especially this system.
The portal is not a guarantee

We agree, Ross needs to embrace a 23-24 Hassan Diarra defensive pest role.
But Diarra was always a good defender even when his offense wasn't great his first year. I haven't seen that from Ross yet.

He shot well over 50% from the floor. He should have been playing more, especially given he was our toughest perimeter defender. I would have had solo at point and played Liam, Alex and Jaylin together more often.

The form is fine, but we now have a pretty large sample of horrible results from 3. Whether it's his form or mental doesn't really matter, the ball is not going in the basket
56 shots over 2 years at 1 attempt per game is not a large sample. It's basically meaningless considering game rhythm. It takes way more attempts than people realize for 3pt % to stabilize (like 700 attempts).

Like to see kids playing multiple seasons in a UConn uni.
Uncle Donny just might have had something to do with Stewies decision
At least we know AK is unlikely to play at UConn next season, I have real mixed feelings on that one.
I don’t know if one means the other here. I could see AK back at the 4 and JStew starting at the 3.

700? Karaban has "only" shot 574 in his three years.

Much of Danny’s success is finding the right “type” of kid that fits with him and his system. Stewie would have received a very nice nil package in the portal. After a somewhat disappointing sophomore year, the fact Stewie decided to stay speaks volumes on the kid(and his family). He is one of Danny’s guys and I expect a huge jump next year. Really excited about this.

Exactly. Consider his giant slump this year. Are we confident he's a 40% shooter, 35% percent, or something in between? What if that slump happened in his first year?

it certainly happened down the stretch last year, too.

I'd say he's a ~ a 37% three point shooter. Very good but not great. He's had "slumps" the past 2 seasons that both went ~ 5 games each. It is what it is. I'm no statistician, but I'd imagine statistical relevance has been reached with 574 shots taken.

I'm so excited for Stewie as I've always had a soft spot for him in my heart as a prospect, but more so than that I think this is huge on a culture point. Just having a kid with lots of potential stay for their third year despite the adversity they've faced in waiting their turn and having faith in being loyal. Could be an incredible recruiting story tbh.

Hopefully he's the next Andre Jackson story. :)

Great news! Hoping he makes a huge leap next season! Time for Cousin Donny to do some 1-on-1 coaching, both on & off the court.

STOP POSTING.

Soph-jun and jun-sen jumps led to two national championships... It just didn't come together this year. Doesn't mean player development won't continue for next year's squad.
We literally have banners hanging due to those jumps in player development. Bazz, Kemba, Okafor were all developed within the program to name a few. Hurley developed Sanogo, Clingan , Jackson.

The transfer portal era happens and certain “fans” just want to throw/trade away talented and committed players to our program just bc they haven’t materialized as fast as or in the way they would like. It’s messed up

Not to mention, Jaylin is young for his class. He just turned 20 in February. Youssouf is 22 months older than him, Solo 14 months older, Jayden Ross 7 months, and Steph 4 months. Age is such an underrated factor in college basketball.

Jaylin already has the talent but what he needs is confidence and attitude. Does he have it in him?
Hopefully McNeeley rubbed off on him in that department this year.

From a Borges article this morning. Not surprising. Wasn't St. John's out of the NCAA Tournament by then? :)

Before he and his family had even reached the parking lot at the Lenovo Center following the UConn men's basketball team's season-ending, NCAA tournament loss to Florida in Raleigh, N.C., Jaylin Stewart was getting contacted by numerous programs.

Stewart hadn't even entered the NCAA transfer portal — hadn't even left the premises, for that matter — before the sophomore forward was garnering interest, including at least one close to his Seattle home.

According to a source close to Stewart, he loves and is fiercely loyal to UConn, the coaching staff and his teammates.
