Something a little different so I figured I'd post it. Borges spoke to Stewart's stepfather about how Jaylin is doing at UConn. Good news came back from the MRI on the shoulder. Though it doesn't say if he's playing tomorrow or not.

When Stewart was told about a week ago that freshman Braylon Mullins was taking over his spot in the starting lineup, he could only relay that information in a text: "It is what it is. It's nothing I'm doing wrong."

"He was positive," Jones reported. Most kids would've been, '(Bleep) this place. He was really positive. I've never seen him mad about not playing. He's trusting what they're giving him."

The culture Hurley and staff have built has gone such a long way in building the depth of this team. Plenty of guys on this team could get way more PT elsewhere and are completely bought in, Stewart being one of them.

Were Solo & Stew not the ones that went right to Hurley after last year saying they were coming back?

Stew is a company man - I've had my doubts in him at times, but I do pull for the kid. I have to think Hurley rewards him next year with a starting role. There is no way he was thinking he was starting over Mullins this year.

In an era of “me me me” college athletics it is so refreshing to have a kid like Jay Stew at UConn. I have no doubt he will be successful at whatever he chooses to do after college.

Having guys willing to wait their turn and who also trust the role they have been assigned is a huge advantage for us. Our depth is attributed to have upper class-men like Ross and Stewart who have had the time to develop and who didn’t jump ship for a grass-is-greener scenario.

I think Stew realizes that opportunities still lay ahead for him. I can’t help but think of Hilton Armstrong and his career at UConn. He had 3 years of similar minutes as Stew and then a role opened up his Senior year and he capitalized on it. Had a long career between NBA and overseas. I’m hoping that is something that can happen for him. He is a talented player and you never know when that leap on the court will come.

Such a good kid. UConn through and through. I think a lot of the noise about him leaving last year was self inflicted (cough cough by someone on twitter close to him) but it’s clear he never considered it. I think Hurley is tough on him because he knows Stewie has “wall” potential. He’s got a game that actually translates better to the NBA court than college and I think he’s got a decent chance of being a draft pick after his senior year. He could easily be a Herb Jones style player

Stewie is old school. It shows what type of program Hurley has built here at UConn and the type of players he looks for. Jaylin is a great testament of this and for our program. Go Jaylin Stewart big fan.

A few things stood out to me here

I didn’t know him and Ross were roommates. They’re both extremely high character guys. Frankly they’ve both been recruited over by freshmen the last two years. Even this year they’ve both been hopping around different parts of the rotation because of injuries around the team. They’ve handled themselves perfectly through it all and I love those quotes from Stew and his dad about the starting situation

St John’s at MSG on his birthday. Circle that one. I’m feeling a really strong game from him

Great that he has family to come out so often. Even greater that he’s able to use NIL to make it more affordable for them

I love Stewart. We’re always going to look back fondly of him. 9/10 guys in his situation would have transferred already to get themselves in a better individual situation. Jaylin is a Husky through and through. He’s bought in to the team and the school, so I’m bought in on him no matter what

It seems strange that Ross and Stew don't play well at the same time. If they could get it together, next year will be their team. If not....

I hear you, but is it really "recruiting over" someone when you add new personnel in a lower class? Basketball teams try to get better every year. Should coaches not recruit, or only recruit guys who aren't as good as their existing upperclassman?

That comment is not really aimed at you. It's just a pet peeve of mine.

Agree. "Recruiting over" is the dumbest term in college basketball. College basketball is very competitive. The best players play the most. If you don't want someone else playing ahead of you then beat that other player out for the playing time. Everyone on a team has that opportunity. It's as simple as that.

It's clear that Hurley recruits a 'type' now and Stewart and Ross are clearly, mentally that type he wants. If Stewart's 3 point shot becomes reliable he could be great. He has moments he plays well, and he's been important on defense, but he had a few games where he just had a few really bad turnovers, but they ended up not hurting them in the end.
He battles, competes and just leaves it all on the floor. Hope he gets 100% healthy and breaks out down the stretch. It would just make a really good team even more dangerous.
I've post it before, but one of the big advantages of depth, is you can absorb of the hit of having a guy or two have an off night or mini slump because there are other bullets in the other chambers that can do the damage if they go off in those particular games. Look at the last couple of UConn championship teams they had several different leading scorers in games throughout the season.

"Recruited over" someone was supposed to be two commitments for the same position in the same class.
