Jaylin Stewart Borges Article

Of all the " one more years" I've wanted in regards to players in my 40 years of watching UConn basketball , Cam Spencer is at the top. Seeing what he's done in the g League and limited NBA minutes leads me to think he could have accomplished something other worldly with one more year here.
Cam was my favorite as well, but as much as I wanted it for selfish reasons, he’s 23 years old and it was time for him to go. And his play has validated that decision.

As for Stew, I agree with the consensus here. He needs more minutes. 20+ every game. He’s one of our most talented players and will continue to get better with more regular playing time.

When Diarra sits I wouldn’t mind seeing a lineup of Ball, McNeeley, Stewart, Karaban and either Johnson/Reed. It’s a big lineup that would be a matchup nightmare for most teams and AK and McNeeley can be a point forward for a 5 minute stretch. It definitely would be opponent specific as it wouldn’t work if playing small/quick guards

Stewart's offense is ahead of his defense. For him to truly win Hurley's trust he needs to pick it up on defensive side of the ball.
If that logic made sense, Ball and Mahaney would get minimal minutes.

He. Needs. To. Play. More.

He. Needs. To. Play. Defense.

I thought Stew did an excellent job defensively last year. This year, not so much. I know +/- is not the best overall stat from an individual standpoint, but he was -5 against Gonzaga, -3 against Texas, -4 against Baylor, -11 against Dayton, -2 against Colorado, and -2 against Memphis.

Now put some perspective on that... He had double figure scoring games against Gonzaga and Memphis. I think he has a lot of offensive talent and I like what we does on that end. But he gets beat off the dribble at will.

Stew makes more sense as a point forward than Karaban imo, he's a better dribbler and just as good of a passer. Karaban has a loose handle, especially in tight spaces.

Definitely true. But, like we've all said, defense improves with reps. Cam was much much better at the end of the year on defense than he was at the beginning of the year. Solo's showed signs of improvement from the Gonzaga game. More defensive reps for Stew in real game time will force him to improve. 20 minutes for the three sophomore wings and some minutes for Singare seems like a shrewd investment to make come tournament time. If we can legit go 3 deep with 6'10ish centers we will all be feeling pretty good about our chances. This team is as deep as we talked about all of season, but we all underestimated how raw everyone was particularly for Dan Hurley's system. Mahaney will come good in the Joey California role!! Need Ahmad Nowell healthy!

.-.
I’d love to know if +/- stats are available for the roster. The ESPN college box scores don’t track them the way they do for NBA games.

The Bleacher Report app does them. Honestly, I think Stew has been in the negative against all the major teams we've played. Ball and Mahaney's defensive struggles are obvious to the eye, but Stew has not been much better which I think, in part, is revealed in his negative +/-.

To be fair he’s also playing with more bench players on the floor typically than Ball or Mahaney would. He passes the eye test to me.
