Why Jaylin Stewart's big effort in UConn's win over Gonzaga was 'personal' for the Seattle product

“Stewart hit four of five field goals and both his free throws. He grabbed three rebounds and blocked a shot. It wasn't his highest-scoring game of his career (he had 16 earlier this season against both Memphis and Maryland-Eastern Shore), but it was certainly his best effort in a victory over a high-major team.”

At one point I want to see a

Diarra-Liam-Stewart-AK-Reed

I think is our most potent line up

On offense he shows glimpses of a really gifted player. His backwards, falling bucket against Gonzaga was a nearly impossible shot and I think his three pointer will only improve.

Stewart's offense is ahead of his defense. For him to truly win Hurley's trust he needs to pick it up on defensive side of the ball.

I think 15-20 minutes is what he should be playing. Say 8 minutes of blow for each of Karaban of McNeeley and maybe 4 minutes playing with them based on Hurley's typical subsitution patterns. That's about his ceiling for minutes. Certainly he may play more against Xavier with Johnson likely out. I agree on playing the 3 together more. Those 3 with Reed and Diarra can be an effective lineup if Stewart improves his defense.

Season long they are not, and are not all that useful in that context anyway. But they're available game by game here

Hoop-Explorer, EvanMiya, and CBB Analytics all have season long plus minus of various types. But you are correct that they need to be adjusted to mean much. Hoop-Explorer RAPM is the gold standard to me for plus minus metrics for college ball, though Evan Miya's BPR does use plus minus as part of it (along with on/off and other stuff).

He's a young player with all that entails. When he's locked in, he's very good off ball and pretty good on ball. But sometimes he loses focus on his man and gets cut on or whatever, and he gets blown by at times when guarding on ball. Referencing the stats mentioned in the last post, he comes out as pretty average defensively. Worse than Ross, Karaban, and McNeeley, better than Ball and Mahaney.

I find the CAM-McNeeley comparison to be a little too much appearance vs basketball, but now that Hurley said it its gonna stick.

To me Liam is replacing Castle. As great as I believe Castle was, there is offensive upside to Liam's game and his size makes the contributions on the defensive end comparable (edge Castle obv). The frontcourt is getting quite good as all 5 playing major minutes at SF, PF & C have improved in just a month. Stewart was uber comfortable coming off the bench vs. Gonzaga, knew exactly what his role was and executed confidently.

I'm at the point where I'd like to see Stewart getting 20-25 mpg every game, even if it means sacrificing some Ball or Ross minutes.
Stewart is second only to McNeeley when it comes to three level scoring. And he rebounds.

His fire and his all around game and his big shot capability are what compares him to Cam.

Assuming Liam is a 2/3, I think JStew is our next best choice at the 2/3. They can and have played together.
I’d love to know if +/- stats are available for the roster. The ESPN college box scores don’t track them the way they do for NBA games.

I just filtered out for the last 3 games. Keep in mind the other players in the lineup at the same time, but the numbers show that both our offense and defense are not quite as good at this point with JStew in the lineup:

Also, he & McNeeley playing together is not an improvement over our base offense or when he's off:

Eye test. The more Stewart plays without the worry of being hooked, the more he’ll be able to find his rhythm. At that point the numbers will start supporting what we’re all seeing.

I think the ideal role for Stewart is 20ish minutes, come in and be aggressive. Win 6th man of the year, and explode as our replacement for Karaban next year. He’s starting to figure out his place in the offense.

Good things happen when he's on the floor.
And he is bad news to the opponent when he comes in at 6-8 and well rested and they're dragging arse. Rebuilding the killer bench. It will be even bigger with this year's team

Next year with Diarra gone, Johnson gone, Karaban gone...we bring in 2 guards, a 3, and a C.

I think Maheney transfers out.

Lineup if Stewart stays:

C - Reed, Jr / Reibe off bench (or Singare)
F - Stewart / Singare off bench (or Reibe)
F - Ross / Abraham off bench / Furphy off bench
G - Nowell / Adams off bench
G - Ball / Mullins off bench

Probably get +1 from the portal with Maheney leaving.

Lineup if Stewart goes NBA:

C - Reed, Jr / Reibe off bench (or Singare)
F - Abraham / Singare off bench (or Reibe)
F - Ross / Furphy off bench
G - Nowell / Adams off bench
G - Ball / Mullins off bench

+2 from the portal then.
You ditched Mahaney after a month.
