Jana's surgery | The Boneyard

Jana's surgery

I could be wrong, but I think it was established during last season that a player's medical information is private information (and rightly so). Seeing that it is confirmed that she is out for the season, I don't anticipate much in the way of any significant updates other than "it was successful" and "her rehab is going nicely".
As an example (swerve) (or maybe I just missed it in the Azzi threads last season), was it ever officially released what Azzi's second injury was last season and did she have another surgery?

IMO news about it will leak out just like when Carol had her surgery in the off season.
It's already been publicized that Jana needed surgery.
Geno will be asked about it during a presser & he'll give an update with Jana's consent.
It's only a matter of time.

Who is Carol?

Carol is Caroline Ducharme. Whenever Geno talks about her, he uses the name "Carol". It's something I've not gotten used to, and many still call her Caroline... But it's not a mistake, or a poster calling her by the wrong name... :)
Swerve: I type Caroline every time only because when I type C A on my phone, the program immediately offers me Caroline already typed out. It’s the path of least resistance.

I had mentioned in an earlier thread my hope that Jana could partner with the Sun's Bri Jones if both were rehabbing in CT. Looks like Bri is. Fingers crossed that they can work together... Bri is a hard worker, really exceptional in the deep post, and just a really positive and good human. :)

I do wonder if Jana will be able to accompany the team when it goes to Europe. If her rehab activities can be done amidst travel I hope she gets the OK from the medical staff. The trip is about one week? It might be tough on Jana to not be a part of her USA family and I bet she would enjoy watching the practices and games....her loud rambunctiousness would be energizing for herself and the team.

Bri Jones made an appearance on the Sun bench for their game yesterday against the Lynx. She was using a specially designed tricycle to move, since she obviously cannot walk normally about two months after her surgery. She had a huge cast on her lower right leg, so she rested that leg on her vehicle while using her left leg for propulsion.

I would think that gives her more mobility than she would get from crutches while providing more protection for her right leg and ankle.

I would expect Jana to be similarly limited for the next few months.

I used the same device when I had Achilles surgery. Even used it at a bunch of Sun games thst summer. It is a huge upgrade frim crutches.

Reminds me of a scene from last year - Caroline in a hospital bed with the entire team around her giving their best wishes and morale support - hope we see something similar with Jana...!

Maybe I am wrong but I thought I read an article somewhere a few days ago that said she had the surgery.

If she is cleared to travel with the team, If I'm Geno, I make every effort to make sure she has whatever she needs to make accompanying the team as easy and comfortable for her as possible. The choice of these two walkers would be hers.

These are called "knee walkers"

They also have motorized chairs that are completely collapsible, and fold up almost flat.

Several years ago, knee walkers were all the rage. I saw people using them almost every trip I made to the grocery store. I knew five people using them over the course of about a year. Every one of those people wound up with problems in the other leg/foot. I hardly ever see anyone using one now.

Interesting. I understand your concern, and it's a valid one.
1. Jana would only be using this device for the 12 days they're on tour.
2. Jana is only 17 years old, and is a healthy athlete. Would you say that the 5 people you knew were not as healthy or physically fit as Jana?

I'm not a doctor or a medical therapist, but I'd be surprised if use of this "scooter" for 12 days would cause her any further problems down the road. I don't think the medical staff would recommend it if that were a possibility. There are other alternatives. Go with the motorized version, which DOES NOT necessitate or depend on the use of the other leg. Crutches are also an option. Not a good one, but it is an option. What ever is decided, it must work for Jana. ;)

Carnac, I agree that the UConn folks would only put Jana on one of those knee walkers if there was no risk. I was just remarking how ubiquitous these things were for such a short time.

Most of the folks I knew that were on them, it was just for a few weeks. One, though, and he was the one with the worst injury to the other leg, was on it for probably three months. They were all in their 40s or 50s, a variety of activity levels.

You guys reminded me of my father, who had a knee replaced late in life. After the surgery, he was happy to report that his knee felt much better when he walked on it, and then added, “but now my hip hurts.”

Carol is a long way from Caroline, but leave it to the wise guy. If he'd called Doty that she might have smacked him. And try singing Neil Diamond's classic using Carol!

20 years ago, I broke my foot and was in a non-weight bearing cast for 6 weeks or so. I found that I liked using crutches the best. I could get around faster and they were much more maneuverable.

The also go up and down stairs better than the other choices.
