My imaginination can't fathom what is going to happen.
 
They are about to get pasted! By all accounts, this will be the most powerful storm to have hit Jamaica in recorded history.

There is an internet site windy.com where you can zoom right in and see where and how this thing is about to.buldoze across the island.

For those who have never been, the island is volcanic with steep mountainside everywhere.

There will be lots of landslides due to torrential rains (30"+), along with storm surge in excess of 13 ft. Then there will be the staggering wind damage brought by 170 mph+ winds.

I have no frame of reference for what they are about to experience.

This is about as close to a perfect storm as you get in the Atlantic, literally near the mathematical limit for storm intensity on Earth.

If it weren't going to absolutely devastate a population that can little afford it, you could appreciate its beauty.
 
Looks really bad for Jamaica. Hoping for the best for them. It is Hurricane Melissa.
 
Oh man.

I was there right before Sandy hit. The hotel manager called us at 8 in the morning and told us if we didn't leave that day, we'd be there for a week. So we flew out right away ... only to get hit by Sandy back home. Lost power for days.

Beautiful country. This is terrible.
 
For those of you that may want to donate afterwards, my research from some years ago found a company called Direct Relief (DirectRelief.org). From Forbes:

For every dollar donated to Direct Relief, $0.995 goes to program services, $0.003 to administrative costs, and $0.001 to fundraising expenses. Crucially, 0% of donor contributions are used for fundraising because those costs are covered by earnings from a separate, generous bequest, meaning 100% of your donation goes to humanitarian efforts.

Jamaican people are the best. We had around 8 Jamaican kids move my little CT town when I was in middle school, their moms were nurses at the local hospitals. I remain friends with a couple of them to this day.

There was a guy on Weather Channel yesterday going on and on about how beautifully perfect the eye structure was.
