Jacobs always wanted us in Conference USA. Him and voices for children and families have no interest in big time sports.
 
I don't see him leaving before his daughter graduates from high school (2019). I think he stays in the college game after that.
 
Is Jacobs physically afraid of KO like he was with JC?

Is Jacob saying that this is the price we are paying for success? That every summer we are going to sweat it out? That we have to have a bag of cash ready to give Ollie- win or lose? Too much money? That Geno doesn't make anything close? Interesting reading for the non-followers, I suppose.

he pretty much laid it out there in the article. While UConn is home for KO, he's also an NBA guy who has built up contacts and a reputation in the league, the allure of coaching in the NBA is always going to be there, you don't spend as much time as he did in the league without it having that attraction.
 
I get ya'll don't like Jacobs(I'm indifferent towards him besides the nonsencial TSam/gang sign article) but I don't get the uproar over this article. Maybe it was a stating the obvious type deal but there are plenty of Courant readers who haven't posted in 50 KO threads who might not have seen this stuff before, or know of what we've already been speculating on in regards to the possibility of KO going to the NBA and it looming over the program for the forseeable future.
 
I know I'm in the minority, but I like Jacobs. I know he had run-ins with Calhoun and he isn't a total homer. But he's a good journalist, which means he shouldn't be a total homer. Sometimes he gets it right, sometimes he doesn't, but he calls it like he sees it.
 
That article was pure conjecture and its premise the antithesis of almost everything we've seen and heard from Kevin Ollie. It said almost nothing about coaching and shaping young men's lives other than in the context of NCAA/recruiting hassles. By listening to Kevin Ollie and seeing what he does I think it is obvious he loves being the coach at UConn and working with young men to develop them as basketball players and people. That's his passion and UConn is the best place for him to do it. The end, NBA speculation is about clicks and leverage.
 
There was nothing wrong with that column. Don't let your views of Jacobs cloud your judgment.

I don't know the man at all, but as a father, I'd think that after 12 team changes in 13 years during his kids' formative years and building up a nice little nest egg that will take care of his grandchildren's' children, Ollie wants to take a few years off from the vagabond lifestyle. The Celtics have Brad Stevens and a long term vision (bad luck in the lottery notwithstanding) and Ollie is not high profile enough...right now...for the Knicks. Beyond that, an NBA contract is not iron clad. I'm not saying that a college contract is, but Ollie would be expected to win immediately in the NBA. If a turnaround takes longer than three years, he's gone. Yes, he earn $12-15 Mil plus a buyout, but no job certainty and he will become used goods.

By winning the nation championship, Ollie has earned probably 4-5 years of goodwill at UConn. Does he have to win another Championship in that timeframe? I don't think so (it took Calhoun 13 years to win his first and 7 years between '04 and the improbable '11 run.), but it will certainly help. In the 5 year period, Ollie will bank the same $15 million he would have in the NBA, but he will have more options. Of course that presupposes that Ollie fails in the NBA and be a success in college. On the other hand it is not a far leap. Who was the last "successful college coach to make the jump (if you concede that the jury is still out on Brad Stevens)? Ollie has already proven to be a success in college.

That said, If his daughter is close to graduation, I think he considers the NBA a little more toward the end of this contract.
 
There's nothing wrong with it; there's also nothing newsworthy about it. It simply confirms that he doesn't know anything more than what most here already know, and he can speculate like anyone else.

I know it's getting to be an antiquated notion, but I generally look for something newsworthy or at least insightful when I am reading a newspaper article.

Jacobs is a columnist, not an investigative reporter. He is paid to give his opinion. Unfortunately for him, that opinion is shared by many a person on the Boneyard, and therefore is deemed un-newsworthy.

Except that you aren't the only one reading the newspaper. If you're spending a lot of time looking up as much information you can find on a subject, then a front page article in the local paper intended for laypeople isn't going to give you anything you don't already know.

Correct, which is why I phrased my comments as I did. You don't even need to spend any time looking up anything on this subject in order to know everything in the article. If you've simply paid attention and followed the story as it was reported, there is zero news and zero insight that would be remotely enlightening to anyone here imo.

It says that even though KO is reportedly on the verge of signing a nice contract with UConn as reported, and even though we appear to have him for the short-term and mid-term while his kids are in school locally, he may be lured by the NBA one day because they can pay him more. So we may have to hear these rumors again in coming summers.

I think that's fair. Most want a total homer in that role. I don't. Plus, I think he's a talented writer.

He can write a nice piece no doubt. My great objection to Jacobs over the years has been his penchant for injecting of himself into the narrative. It was often about his relationship to Calhoun or his feelings about Calhoun based on his previous interactions, rather than the actual story/situation at hand. It took away from the strength of his articles and did the opposite of adding credence to his voice.
