Jackie McMullen Makes The Case For Stewie

On ESPN's "Around The Horn" show today, sportswriter Jackie McMullen was asked about SI's choice of LeBron James as it's "Sports Person of the Year." McMullen said James was an OK choice, but went on to say that if any male had led a college team to four consecutive championships, that player would have been an odds-on choice for SI. She asked (in reference to our Stewie), "Name someone else who has done it." As we Husky fans know, there were a couple of other correct answers possible. But McMullen's defense of WBB and Breanna was on point and appropriate. Stewie was, in fact, one of the finalists.

Of course, it can also be said the Stewart's list of achievements requires no defense whatsoever.

So place Stewie on that exclusive pedestal with Russ.

In an Olympic yr I actually thought Stewie had a good chance for SI's award because of her Olympic gold medal on top of everything else she achieved. Frankly, I would have been OK if SI gave the award to Michael Phelps, Simone Biles, Katie Ledecky or Usain Bolt, all of whom were finalists. While I think Lebron is great, I don't think he was the most deserving this yr.

Dan Patrick show today they went around his Danette nerd crew and one said Breanna Stewart because UConn had never had a player of the year, then they all yucked it up. Back handed compliment. This is all well and true.

Russ won that NCAA championship about the time I was born (3-25-56), so for me that's pretty much rewinding the whole tape.

Russ and Stewie had another unique achievent, unmatched by their peers -- or followers. The knack for stringing championships in sequence. Stewie's last NCAA Championship was #4 in succession and the first NBA ring for Russ was his first of eleven!

(Only Stewie has 4 NC rings and an Olympic gold medal.)
