It’s time to get over college football. Here’s why.

"It’s sacrilege for someone on UConn Twitter to admit it, but I’m going to speak truth to power. UConn football is a joke.

This is a basketball school. Has been for 35 consecutive years and will be for the foreseeable future. The men’s and women’s programs move the needle.

The football program has time and time again failed to provide a life raft when it comes to conference realignment. With the Big 12 flirting with new members, the football program’s failures serve as UConn’s ultimate scarlet letter.

No one is delusional enough to believe that dropping football is a good idea in any possible universe. But to pretend that a 6-7 record and a passionate (that’s a kind word for it) head coach is enough to get UConn a seat at the big kid’s table is folly."

Talk about bad timing eh? Why on earth would you feel the need to write this article for the school newspaper and who in their right mind thought it was okay to publish? Might need @Dooley to tweet some knowledge to this kid. Can reach the author on twitter @ElanDeCarlo

This person is the new Mac and Cheese kid. Should be ostracized in the same way for this moronic drivel.

I don't agree, let me get that out there first.

... But this is what 5 years of terrible football does to a fan base. Students at UConn don't remember when UConn football was good and exciting because they were all too young.

Welcome to the trend of the fair weather fan... They go the way the wind blows... If we were winning, putting up 30-40 points a game and 500+ yards of offense and on ESPN highlight reals, being talked about all the time on College Football Gameday, different story..

BUT, we're not.. We're UConn... Bring your lunchpale, get in the trenches, fight to the end UConn... So what we've been playing football over turned centuries.. so what, right? So what we've got a history of NFL athletes... so what?

I honestly can't stand when bandwagonners ride the coats of the media when goals are getting accomplished over time..

We're on the cusp of doing some big things in football ... My opinion. I've watched the transition from the Tom Jackson days while on campus, to Skip Holtz then transitioning to FBS with Edsall... up to now... We're almost there.. not there yet, but almost... No need to stop now.. let this thing run its course... When we win the big ones on the national stage like in '95 (WBB) and then '99 (MBB)... the hate will still be there... But the UConn faithful will rise...

"I promise this is not a hot take. I’m not trying to stir the pot. I just have to be honest."

This is how it opens. It's like saying no offense...the offense is still there. This is absolutely a hot take. Stupid one too.

He clearly just wants attention... My sense is he will get it.

@the_dailycampus @ElanDeCarlo@dcsportsdept what ill informed drivel. UConn football has six 8-9 win seasons in its short FBS history.

@Slance66 you're a uconn/Kansas fan. Must be an expert in basketball schools with disgraceful football. Thanks for reading!

@ElanDeCarlo And KU won the Orange bowl and had a top 10 finish in 2008. Don't measure UConn football on the PP years. It's a blip.

Elan looks about 16 yrs old on his LinkedIn profile, although he's probably 19-20. Given his age and obvious lack of historical perspective and facts about UConn football, I'll cut him some slack here.

His profile says he's been an intern at the Hartford Courant since June and, for two years, a staff writer for the Daily Campus "covering Division One sports teams across the UConn campus". I'm thinking his HC internship could explain the recent piece.

He also says that "I speak with coaches, players and staff administration to write previews and recaps of games from various teams." Hmm, I wonder how many conversations he's had with the current football staff? I'm guessing few to none, but boy would I like to see if he has the cajones to ask for an interview now, do some actual football research, and report back?

And his core premise that "it's the men's and women's basketball programs that move the needle"? Exactly what needle is that, I wonder? Maybe the one at the end of an intravenous drip line which might help UConn Division I sports stay alive and relevant for a couple more years?

Come on Elan, you can do better than this! You're a Husky, and therefore very intelligent! And we need some credible sports journalists who fairly cover UConn Husky sports (i.e with facts and informed opinions). I'm rooting for you!

He will be asking Geno about taking a cut in pay in a couple of years. And women's basketball is worth a warm bucket of spit in the grand scheme of things.

The keyboard and monitor are very safe places. Big shield to criticize and not have to worry about the return volley. Leaders like Diaco, and make no mistake, the man is a leader, take responsibility, take risk, they build, they succeed and they fail.

Kid taking pot shots. Hopefully he leads and builds someday.

What risks? Running on first and second down, fair catches...ALWAYS, never blitzing, EVER.... No 53 yd FG attempt at end of half with great PK?

Sadly, Elan-Paolo is probably a journalism major with no real job prospects. With the decline of newspapers, those pursuing what was a once noble profession are now required to reduce their thoughts to 140 characters while writing about conference realignment in their mother's basement.

The Case for UConn Football: An Open Response to The Daily Campus

I could already picture it in my mind. The crisp autumn air of an October game day, parking lots full of tailgating and excitement about the days matchup, the roar of the crowd as the Huskies ran up the score on various Big East opponents. To top it all off UConn would go on to win the Big East and make a trip to one of college football’s most prestigious bowl games to play the Oklahoma Sooners that year, I didn’t need anymore convincing. I received my acceptance letter and committed to the University of Connecticut to become a member of the class of 2015.

Fast forward almost six years and we arrive at today. I am a UConn grad who suffered through the worst four years of Husky football since its inception. I witnessed the immediate fall from grace of a program on the rise to almost rock bottom. I watched as the landscape of college sports shifted bringing UConn from a powerhouse in what was once a power conference, to a program on the Titanic as all the life boats are drifting away.

Given the chance to take all this back and choose another school with a more successful football program in a more stable conference would I?

Not a chance. Not even for free tuition.

If he loves the BB team he's stuck with the fact that it's future is linked to the future of the FB program. And we'rs stuck with the fact that a lot of people from students to sports broadcasters have short or selective memories about what UConn FB is capable of. Coach D has the responsibility to change that perception, but he's going to have to adjust his own thinking about what is required of an offense to compete in today's game.
