When football teams are losing they use a strategy called an 'onside kick'.

Generally these are teams that haven't given up and are still trying to win. 11 points is an insurmountable lead so you don't want to waste that page of the playbook.

I thought tonight and against Towson, with three time outs left, the right thing to do was to kick it away. Both times the other team had three and outs and were forced to punt the ball with very little time run of the clock. The problem with an onside kick is that less than 5% work. Then the other team either punts and pins you deep or they get a first down and kick a field goal. I have a lot of issues with coaching decisions. That was not one of them.

Please onside kicks are successful more than 5% of the time.

It's about being aggressive and wanting to win. Like Edsall going for it on 4th down a bunch of times.

And why didn't we go for it late when it was 4th and 1.5 yards? That punt told me that we weren't playing to win anymore.

Down 11 with time left P wanted to get off the field. He resigned before our eyes. Can be terminated with cause.

Were you sitting behind me in section 206? Cause that's exactly what the guy behind me was saying. With a couple "frikkin"s and "goddam"s thrown in (but nothing fouler than that).

My wife was glad my ranting and raving was making people laugh this season.

Yeah, I couldn't believe they kicked off there. We were still down TWO scores with 4:30 to play. Two. The unintelligent coaching decisions from this staff continue to baffle me game in and game out. Although by now, I should really start to expect this.

I honestly think PP didn't onside kick because he wanted to get it to be a one score game. If they somehow got lucky from there and won, great...but in the end, he wanted the score to look close so he could claim that we were just one way away from victory.

I literally do not think he was trying to win anymore, and that is sad. There are no points for covering the spread, especially since I can't imagine how even a die hard fan would have bet UConn yesterday.

Not going for it on that 4th and very short in the early 4th made me nearly want to onto the field and punch him in the throat.

The strategy of kicking away at that point is legit.

P. does much wrong. But he was not wrong to kick away.

No, we needed the ball right there. If it fails and we stop them for an FG, it's still a 2 possession game.

We kick away. We stop them. We get either a FG or TD, we need both. Then we onside kick.

The percentages are much better than onside kicking twice.

It's legit.

After the long kick, Uconn had a 3rd & 5, down 11, in FG position at the Maryland 30 with approx 2:15 on the clock. Worst case scenario should be an incomplete pass and a FG putting Uconn down 8 with 2 minutes left and an onside kick coming up.

Instead Whitmer takes His 2nd sack of the game from the MD 30 taking the team out of FG position.

I think the play there was to onside kick. We were down two scores and had problems with their skill position players all night. We kick off, we might not have seen the ball back again. Granted, we made the stop, but my point is that kicking off doesn't guarantee that we get the ball back. They could have very easily run out the clock or taken it down to under a minute. I see your point...you're banking on the three and out (which we got so kudos to the team for that). I just felt that their speed on offense was much too overwhelming for our tired D at that point and they needed to try to get the ball back. We had just scored quickly and might have had their D a little shell-shocked at that point so if we had recovered the onside kick, we might have been able to take advantage.

when your defense can't stop the run it's wrong play, granted the 4th and short play to punt it away was worse. Not sure you can have confidence in this years defense.
