Issues With Arena Developer

Per upcoming BOT agenda. Developer is requesting more $$ due to soil conditions on proposed site. BOT will vote on an agreement extension and additional funding. Terminating agreement with developer is a possibility. Completion of arena has been push back to Fall 2022.

Is it an environmental (contamination) or geotechnical (inadequate soil bearing capacity) where a conventional spread footing foundation will not work and some type of ground improvements or a pile foundation is necessary? Did they say?

Didn't say, the budget request looks like doubling the design costs and environmental remediation costs. I would guess than an initial site investigation found something that required more investigation and a remediation plan. They also likely changed the initial scope of the building. That would account for the increase. The remediation number isn't abnormal looking but the increase design (which would include more investigations) is quite high compared to the original. I doubt they are making it up out of whole cloth, but they may be inflating it based on what the issue actually is.

This is so frustrating. I'm still annoyed that what they plan to build is so small. Tear down the damned XL already and get a proper on campus arena.

It appears that additional funding for the new hockey arena has been removed from tomorrow’s BOT agenda. In addition the RFQ for professional services for mechanical repairs to Freitas has been cancelled. What’s up ?

Typical UConn building process. They have a hard time finding someone to make final decisions and other agendas are constantly tripping over each other.
