Not exactly what you consider a top prospect.
His best position in college was as a mobile 5 Mostly defensive specialist.
Con’s : height , shooting confidence , putting the ball on the floor. The first prevents him from playing the 5 , the last two the 4.
Pro’s : plays tall enough to play the four , with defensive quickness you can’t teach.
Toughness and work ethic are through the roof.
He actually has a decent shooting touch but not a shooter’s mind set , to transition he needs confidence that every shot he takes is a basket. It was sometimes painful watching him wide open outside hesitating Ball handling again is a skill acquired through practice and confidence.
This transition is not easy.
If he gets the right coach at a lower pro level he may surprise.

I really like Tari Eason. He's my sleeper of the draft. He'll go mid 1st but has one of the best chances out of anyone to be all-NBA someday.

All defense maybe, idk if his offense will ever be that good.

He's got the physical characteristics, just gotta put the work in to improve. Nobody is likely to be all-NBA, but he's got the ceiling if he improves his skill.

Whaley met with four NBA teams: the Charlotte Hornets, Memphis Grizzlies, Detroit Pistons and Atlanta Hawks. They all asked Whaley about his basketball story, what he would bring to their respective teams, as well as his time at UConn.

During the interview process, Whaley was pushed to show more of his offensive game, something that was not always apparent at UConn, where he was the fourth or fifth offensive option in the starting lineup.

One NBA assistant went so far as to ask if he regretted not transferring out of UConn for a more prominent role elsewhere. He quickly answered, “No, I have zero regrets.”

What an idiotic question. A more prominent role? The guy was a starter and played 30 minutes a game
I agree, but my guess is he meant a role as the 5 instead of the 4, where Whaley was miscast.

I suspect he meant more of a featured four than a screener/defender/last resort 3 shooter. His handle would have to have improved quite a bit for that, though.

That said, he is a guy very dedicated to being his best. I wouldn't put it past him for some team to take a second round flyer on a guy who can defend inside and out. Defense wins.

Back for his second workout with the hornets. A gleague deal in Greensboro with Donyell as a coach would be very cool.

he's a north carolina kid too, right? gotta think that'd be a dream-come-true for him.

is there is a world where some nba shooting coach guru turns whalley into a 40% corner three-point shooter and he becomes a serviceable back-up big man? maybe. not sure if that charlotte is that world, though.

Yes he is from Gastonia which is very close to Charlotte, so would be a very cool hometown story. Would absolutely love that for the wrench.
