I thought he was out of the slump after he started out the Illinois game on fire in the first half, but he finished 2-9 from 3, yet a respectable 6-14 overall for the game with some good midrange shots and drives.

Was it just good defense that 2nd half? Or do you think he’s still in a (3 pt) shooting slump?

He was efficient in the first half as he was moving around screens and getting into the paint for his mid range. That is how he should be playing in my opinion. I thought he was stagnant with his movement without the ball in the second half.

By any definition, yes. His ability to drive and hit from mid range make up for it a bit, but it’s hard not to be concerned about it at this point.

Nah, it’s not that hard

Anyone think he did a lot of lifting and gained a lot of strength, which is showing up in his improvements in going to and finishing at the basket. But maybe the added muscle is impacting his shooting touch from outside. Seems like he has to recalibrate from 3.

By the numbers it’s still a slump, and I’d say the main factor is everyone knows he’s our most dangerous three point weapon coming into the season and are hyper-prepared for it. Eventually he’ll shoot better despite the coverage, but meanwhile he’s done a fantastic job getting buckets in other ways.

Pretty much everyone said here.

Yes he is. But every aspect of his game has taken a leap, and absolutely love his driving and finishing in the traffic, his mid range jumper is pure money, and his defense is significantly improved.

His long range bomb will come back to the norm once he’s putting more reps and figured out physics part of shots.

I mentioned in the postgame thread, but he was off to a great start scoring at all 3 levels and Illinois couldn’t defend him - so they put in a defensive specialist off the bench to shadow/faceguard him. They adjusted their game plan defensively, and took one of their offensive weapons off the floor in order to account for him - which made them a lot easier to defend at the other end.

The kid did a good job in that role and cooled Solo off, and then he didn’t heat back up with some shots he should have made. But if Solo can play like that and force defensive adjustments to that degree, we’re fine. Everyone else’s job gets easier.

No one thinks that, but there are people here that believe it.

I could be wrong but it looks like Solo is looking to draw a foul when shooting. His legs seem to be extending more. His form looks the same except that part. I wonder if that simple adjustment affected his shot.

Anyways, so glad Ray talked to him the other day and not my Holiday Inn staying arse.

He took a lot of tough shots in the 2nd half, but also missed a wide open one. Yeah, he's still in a slump.

This one has been discussed already. He's definitely still slumping from three. He was 2-9 on top of his already low 24% plus his 1-15 in exhibition.

I will say, his one take to the rim was really sweet. Nom nom. Would love his shot selection to be:

2 to rim
4 mid range
4-5 threes

14pts plus getting to the line 4-5x

Maybe his slump is due to the fact that rather than concentrate on knocking down the jumper, he seems to be more focusing on the and one. Always throwing his legs out and falling to the floor. I hate it. Just shoot and stay upright unless truly hit.

I really don’t know the art of it, but would seem like trying to draw contact should be completely not registering until the ball is released, then instinctive if a defender is collapsing too closely. In his case it seems like he’s thinking about it as he’s shooting.

Well, obviously he's in a 3 point shooting slump. I think part of it is trying to incorporate the new driving stuff and still being set for daggers. I think he figures it out as things go along. He's just too good a shooter with great form to stay around 25%. He'll go 38-40% from here on I would imagine.

I guess I'm in the minority but Solo doesn't even look more muscular to me, I thought he came into the season more sleek and less bulky up top. In regards to his shooting, he still can't knock down 3s but he's getting to his spot and knocking down midrange Js like they're layups, I'd like to see more of them.

According to the roster on the UConn athletics site he gained 10 pounds.

Here’s his two media day shoots.

That's been mentioned before so I was looking closely at that on Friday. He took 9 threes in that game. The first three he took, and made, (first basket of the game - video below) he definitely kicked his legs out which made his form look very strange but the shot went down.

His second one missed badly but it doesn't look like he kicked his legs out.

His third three his legs went forward a little but not like the first three. He missed.

His fourth three he made when he kicked his legs out and got fouled for the 4 point play.

His fifth three he didn't kick his legs out at all and he was wide open and the shot was long off the back iron.

His sixth three he kicked his legs out and put up an airball from the right corner.

His seventh three he kicks his legs out just a little and misses long off the back iron.

His eight three he kicked his legs out a little and misses off the back iron again.

His ninth three he was wide open, didn't kick his legs out at all, and was short off the rim.

I put the time in the game for each three below if you want to check them all out.

It seems that he made some he did kick his legs out and missed many where he didn't (even a wide open one) so this small sample size might show that kicking his legs out isn't his only issue why he's missing so many of this threes. But I agree he kicks his legs out a lot. Did he do that last season?

If this is indeed the problem I would think that's an easy fix and the coaching staff probably has picked up on it and discussed it with him. Hopefully he gets out of this slump soon and goes on a heater from three.

Yes — But

I’m not buying the narrative that he’s hunting fouls on his three-point attempts—it only seems to be a talking point because he’s not shooting well right now. His form looks the same as last year. His shot selection could definitely be better. And those open looks need to be automatic for a player of his caliber. On the first attempt, Boswell caught him in the midsection, which explains the leg-lift reaction.
