Freshman guard Ahmad Nowell, unavailable in that game with a shoulder sprain, will be a game-time decision on Saturday night.

“He’s really trying to get back out there with the shoulder, he’s showed incredible toughness and desire to be out there. We just have to see how the rest of (Friday) goes and tomorrow to see what his availability looks like,” Hurley said. “It’s improving.”

That the best news of the morning. Kid is built like a linebacker glad to hear the injury was not serious and he healed quickly. When I heard shoulder like most of you Gilbert flashed across my mind. With Diarra stepping up as he has been and now hearing Nowell will not be out for an extended period, it’s looking more and more like Mahaney is going to have to get comfortable with a Joey C role. It will be hard for him to adapt from being the guy into a 7 minute offensive energy guy but even before that happens he has to get some of his confidence back. I mean he was thinking so hard about what to do with the ball after crossing half court that he did not make it across the line in 10 seconds. And that was the right call.

Joey C could fast dribble up the court, lead the break, outrun defenders and get off a shot fairly quickly.

AM does not seem to have those abilities. If he could get behind a screen, then he could get off his shot.

On the positive side, he does have a step back move. Maybe he should use it more often in a reserve role as an off guard.
