Other than catching lightning in a bottle a few years back there really has been no progress.

Toscano was supposed to change things but the design and its atmosphere has been blah at best.

So is this program destined for forever mediocrity or do we think new blood would make a difference?

We’ve moved on from football coaches and one men’s hoop coach in recent history. I’m torn on Cav.

Ur thoughts ?

Maybe… but realistically I dont see a leadership change unless someone outside the Athletic Department ponies up $2m+/-to buy out Cav’s contract (his current contract runs through the 2027-28 season).

I just don’t see UConn eating that $$ amount for hockey in the current environment.

This makes sense that is a lot of money to eat but if they extend him before that runs out they’re crazy. He is so far overpaid for the results he brings. Cav is what he is a middle of the pack at best program builder.

I think it is more likely Cav gets another contract extension rather than the school moving in another direction.

I think Cav will get them back to mid pack but not truly competing for HE titles or national tournament appearances and the school will be fine with it. I do not think the school is concerned about making the program a national tournament contender, meaning getting into the tournament on a regular basis.

I am not asking UConn to be BC or BU. However, there is no reason for them not to be Providence, UMass, Maine, or Northeastern. Unfortunately, I do not think the administration is concerned about it.

Did anyone tell Dan Toscano that?

If the school is not concerned at making men's hockey the best it can be, then just let me know so I can stop spending my money and time following this program.

The move to HE and commitment to build a building, plus the hiring of Cav occurred under another AD.

If they didn’t care I doubt they would have built a new arena for them.
Hockey East requires an on campus arena with a capacity of 4000 but UConn received a waiver for 2,600.

The ultimate tell.

The waiver was contingent on splitting games between the XL Center and an on-campus arena of less than 4,000. Who knew the “split” this year would be nine HE games at Toscano, only three (VT, PC and UML) at XL?

If we don’t improve, I won’t be surprised if HE administration considers showing us the door.

It's time every other sport is winning. Jim Mora and Jim Penders have more of a stacked deck against them.

I don't know how anyone can look at this program and not see progress. We've been consistently on the NCAA bubble for a number of years, starting from scratch. The building just opened and we are getting better domestic recruits and transfers.

Yes, we haven't broken through yet but it will happen once the pieces come together at the same time. We are in the deepest league in the country but we aren't Vandy or Northwestern FB.

I have not been a big supporter of Cav for last few years. I think before that he had time to show progress. We certainly have made progress but its been a very long runway to this point. Issues in no particular order:

Years of a sub par power play; consistently poor breaking out of our defensive zone; lapses in teams “effort” within seasons; too many late goals surrendered; too many dumb penalties. These are all coaching issues.

This has lead to not enough wins in big games and absent one “run to the final” zero post season success. I would be OK if we were in year 5 or something like that. We are not and I feel like we will continue to wallow around mid level HE program and say we cant compete with the top programs. I hope I am wrong and will continue to support, but I really say we are Uconn and can win at anything we choose to get behind.

at least 3 years too late. If Lang from AIC becomes available because of their downgrade to D2 its a no brainer assuming lighting doesn't strike and we manage an NCAA bid this year.

This is where I am. I mean UMass was a lower mid-level Hockey East club for years. The right coach and they are an upper echelon program. Not BC BU maybe but certainly Providence Lowell level. Cav is here until March in any case. And we will see what happens. This years team has looked much improved at times but has also fallen back into its lackadaisical style at times. BC and Merrimack are examples of both ends of the spectrum. If they can go forward and finish top 5 in HEA, I’m ok. But more weekends like Merrimack and it’s time to re-evaluate this Spring.

Lang would be my choice. I’m shocked he is still at AIC now.

Outside of stumbling against Merrimack, this year's team has been enjoyable to watch. They seem to have reversed the Toscano curse, however need some road mojo. Yes, it's early, but considering the low expectations I have been pleasantly surprised overall. This year's freshman have been impressive and should only improve. Along with everyone else I am frustrated with the PP, I wish we could decline penalties like football.

Yeah on declining the penalty. We had 7 minute man advantage in one stretch vs BC. Zero goals.

Maine has a very campus focused hockey atmosphere. The only reason Barr comes to UConn would be for more money.
Absolutely true. Men’s hockey is their numero uno winter sport, not men’s or women’s basketball. I’ve been to games there; students line up at 3:00 for 7:00 starts. The entire student section is full of “Maineacs” an hour before faceoff. It’s a great college hockey environment.

It’s Orono, Maine in the winter time…nothing else to do. My lifelong friend went there in the early 80’s and I visited a couple of times. There was less to do there back then, than at UConn, that’s for sure.

I would say the campuses are similar. Both in the middle of nowhere. The biggest sport on campus is hockey. Every home game sells out. At UConn hockey is behind men and women’s basketball. UConn students show little interest in the hockey team.

UConn is much less in the middle of nowhere these days and the winters are much easier to take. No comparison there. Like I said, at UConn we have way more to choose from during the winter. I’ll stand by that.

I would agree winters are much less severe. But again no one is going to UConn for the nightlife. Just ask Ray Allen.

He hasn’t been there in the last 10 years I’d bet, but we can agree to disagree.
