A good friend was a professor and colleague with me at UCONN for several years in the Neag School of Education. His daughter Laya saw Maya, D, and others play here and got hooked. My friend took a position at Michigan State and he and his family moved to East Lansing. Laya has continued her bb in AAU with the Indiana Lady Gym Rats as a (now) 5'10 point guard. She recently graduated from 8th grade and appears to be on her way. Michigan State and Villanova have both offered scholarships.

"She's does a little bit of everything — that's the great thing about her," Stephens said. "She's long and athletic. She has a high basketball IQ. She's a very unselfish player. At her age, she takes pride in defending. A lot of young kids who are athletically gifted who can score and shoot and handle the ball, they tend to not buy into playing at the defensive end. She certainly does that."

Our women inspire so many young girls to achieve at the highest levels. To me, it is one of the best aspects of the UCONN WBB story.

Very nice.

Nice story, even if the details are wrong. Maya Moore and Diana Taurasi never played together at UConn.
Yep, if she's in 9th this year and she went when she was in 1st grade, that would make it the 2007-2008 year. Moore's Freshman year. But she was 6, so gotta give her a little latitude in her memory.

Perhaps I missed something. Where did the OP say 'played together'? Said they saw Maya, D, ... play here and got hooked. I took that to mean that during the time period spanning some portion of D's and Maya's UConn tenure, not 'played together'.

I realize that would make the daughter pretty young to have seen D play but Ms D's performance was certainly memorable.

It's in the article.

A scholarship offer before she even played a high school game? Is this the new norm or is it trying to get a kid to make a decision before all her opportunities are explored. Is the point to get a rash decision from a kid before she has had a chance to develop more and be seen by more programs and therefore getting more offers and maybe a better opportunity?

The Moore/Taurasi game quoted in the DFP newspaper article likely refers to the Nov 2, 2007 game between the UConn Huskies and the USA National Team @ Gampel:

No. 2 Women's Basketball Drops Exhibition Opener to USA National Team 90-74

http://www.uconnhuskies.com/datadump/WBasketball/2008/MediaGuide/Preview (35-42).pdf (page 37)

The exhibition game was Moore’s first as a Freshman and Taurasi was part of the USA National Team’s '2007 College Tour.'

Moore scored 14 points in the game and Taurasi put in 14.

The Huskies lost 74-90.
