A good friend was a professor and colleague with me at UCONN for several years in the Neag School of Education. His daughter Laya saw Maya, D, and others play here and got hooked. My friend took a position at Michigan State and he and his family moved to East Lansing. Laya has continued her bb in AAU with the Indiana Lady Gym Rats as a (now) 5'10 point guard. She recently graduated from 8th grade and appears to be on her way. Michigan State and Villanova have both offered scholarships.
"She's does a little bit of everything — that's the great thing about her," Stephens said. "She's long and athletic. She has a high basketball IQ. She's a very unselfish player. At her age, she takes pride in defending. A lot of young kids who are athletically gifted who can score and shoot and handle the ball, they tend to not buy into playing at the defensive end. She certainly does that."
Our women inspire so many young girls to achieve at the highest levels. To me, it is one of the best aspects of the UCONN WBB story.
