Geno on Saniya Chong: ``Like most freshmen, she looks really good some days. She looks lost some days.'' #UConn #bleedblue

More from Carl Adamec's blog. Gorecki reportedly has offers from Stanford, DePaul, Wisconsin, Michigan State and a bunch of other schools.

Kelly Jekot opened some eyes at USA Basketball’s U-16 national team trials last May. Though she wasn’t one of the 32 players invited to the trials, she paid her own way to Colorado Springs and made it to the final cut.

The University of Connecticut noticed.

Jekot, a 6-foot sophomore guard from Enola, Pa., will make an unofficial visit to UConn this weekend coinciding with the Huskies’ exhibition game against Division II Gannon University Friday night at Gampel Pavilion.

Also making an unofficial visit to Storrs this weekend will be Haley Gorecki, a 6-0 junior guard from Palatine, Ill.

Jekot averaged 12 points and six rebounds in helping Cumberland Valley reach the PIAA Class AAAA final in March. She also totaled 94 assists and 57 steals, and made 42 three-point baskets.

Gorecki averaged 18 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 4.2 assists as a sophomore at William Fremd High. She is a two-time Mid-Suburban League all-conference selection and scored 31 points in the MSL title game win over Rolling Meadows.

More stuff from Geno on Saniya:

“Like most freshmen she looks really good some days and she looks lost some days,” UConn coach Geno Auriemma said. “She picks things up really quickly and what she’s good at she’s really good at. What she’s not good at — defensively — she’s awful at. So when we have the ball she’s pretty good. When they have the ball, she’s not so good.

“She runs up the floor and if she doesn’t have a steal by the time she hits halfcourt she loses interest pretty quickly. But that’s changing a little bit at a time.”

Uconn teaches defense. She will realize that if she wants significant playing time, she will have to show the defensive effort that Geno expects. It won't take long.

Classic Geno !!!

:D

This squares with what Saniya herself was saying about some early scrimmages and needing the most work on the defensive end. Lucky for her she should doesn't have to take over as a starter like Bria did.....! She can work her a*s off and come along at a more reasonably pace as the year wears on. Not that she won't get PT (she will).

I will keep my eye on Jekot as she is right here in our area and my members whose daughter is now expanding her AAU participation will see her regularly. Cumberland Valley is in the greater Harrisburg area in Mechanicsburg about 50 minutes south of me.

Geno once said in an interview that the hardest things to find were scorers, players that are good at putting the ball in the hoop. And IMO wcbb is filled with great athletes that hit less than 50% of their layup attempts. Chong, IMO, has more scoring skills than any freshman guard at Conn in the last 10 years at least. I hope she gets to play some in the meaningful parts of some games. Her transition game on offense will make her a crowd favorite. And her ability to penetrate can only benefit from the new rules interpretations.

Defense can be learned.

Found this on PN about Jekot:

"Kelly Jekot of Enola, Pa., has a chance to be special. A great player comparison for her is former Connecticut guard Kelly Faris. She has good size for the wing positions and is one of the most competitive players in the class. Her ability to make plays for others and score the ball makes her a unique wing prospect. As she continues to round out her skill set and develop physically expect to see big things come from her in the future."

I'm sold!

Any idea what this about?
He probably meant something along the lines of she and her family really like UCONN. Reading between the lines, if her decision were ONLY about college, education, and chances to win a NC, I think it would be UCONN. We've read her father loves UCONN. But given the pressure by others on her to stay home by others, and her feelings of possible homesickness, I think that's what's causing her to pause.

Personally, if that's all he was prepared to say IMO he should have said nothing.

He's the guy who claims to care not a bit about the recruiting 'dance'.

He may not personally care. But he also has a job to keep readers interested in what he has to say.

I thought it was interesting info. It suggests that she had a good visit with UConn, but also that she's getting pressure to stay close to home.

The visit was old news by the night of the Gannon game and was reported on by other members of the Horde who spoke with Wilson's dad. Either John heard something 'new' (which he's not prepared to expound on) or he's just covering old ground and offering up a tease.

I think it's like Vowelguy said, he is keeping us panting for news and spoon feeding us readers and UConn news followers. JohnA is just teasing us. But I think he knows we aren't laughing because we want the news.
