@AustinKarp
With NBA Kings likely staying in Sacramento, Hartford keeps title of largest US media market without a major pro sports team

I was unaware of this fact. Some people are replying saying it's "too close to NYC/Boston". Still, it's unbelievable that such an untapped market remains on the board with conference realignment.

Ha. I looked at the list to see what markets behind us have neither a pro team nor a BCS university. Some names:

http://www.stationindex.com/tv/tv-markets

#30 Hartford
#31 Kansas City -- Univ of Kansas, pro
#32 Columbus OH -- Ohio State
#33 Salt Lake City -- Utah, BYU
#34 Cincinnati -- pro
#35 Milwaukee -- pro
#36 Greenville-Spartanburg-Asheville-Anderson -- Clemson
#37 San Antonio -- pro
#38 West Palm Beach-Ft. Pierce
#39 Grand Rapids-Kalamazoo-Battle Creek
#40 Birmingham - Alabama

Looks like West Palm Beach and Grand Rapids/Kalamazoo.

Western Michigan is in Kalamazoo but...

Hockey jokes aside, Columbus has the Blue Jackets, so they don't count...

This is tricky in some ways. For example, Cinci-Columbus are about to be merged into a single market, which makes sense. Thay also have Dayton nearby. Combined, it's much bigger. It's really southern Ohio and northern Kentucky.

KC isn't that large, and technically the DMA doesn't include Lawrence-Topeka, but KC TV stations are all you get there. Also, those pro teams reach well into Iowa and Nebraska, as well as southern Missouri. Everyone in Wichita is a Royal's - Chiefs fan as well. So those teams serve dozens of markets.

SLC likewise covers the whole state and the Jazz would have fans in Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico etc.

The media impact of a city for sports is extended well beyond its DMA when it has fewer large cities around it. That's why Hartford, Greenville et. al., and West Palm are downgraded. Same with Grand Rapids- Kalamazoo (covered by Detroit). Our market is seen as covered, perhaps double covered, by NY and Boston.

If you add Fairfield County to the New Haven/Hartford market that would represent the 20th or 21st largest market.
