(be prepared for a lot of reading ... I started this when Edsall was just forming the first coaches)

STAFFING

I think the key determinant of who might be a top Conference team could very likely be the best QB situation. And a little analysis provides you with some notion of what the fall will be.

The other thing I have noticed through PP and Diaco is the components of Staffing, budgets, and how that effects the on-field Product. Recruiting. Culture (oooh Diaco word)

Here is the look across 11 staffs - Navy really never changes (and they get to have more assistants) - and the mix is interesting. I have some conclusions looking through all these bits of information (like you should always go get the Stephenville (Texas) HS coach) ... but the mix that Randy Edsall brought in makes me very optimistic.

Two notable feelings about my Hypothesis - both Temple and Houston are LESS than they were before December. A drop in talent, experience and recruiting reach. And when you peruse the staffs ... you get a feel for what these Programs are trying to get at.

Tulsa

Phil Montgomery is now 45. He spent 5 years with Art Briles and then 7 years at Baylor with Briles. Before that he was with Briles at Stephenville (TX) HS.

DC Norwood has had a long coaching career but hooked up with Montgomery the last 7 years at Baylor and was DC/Safeties/DB coach at Penn State for 7 years

Bill Young the other co-DC and DL coach has a long history in coaching at multiple high level stops including Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

6 other coaches – all younger – came with some Baylor connection including Joe Gillespie who was HC/AD at Stephenville (TX) HS. Most all of them come with deep Texas high school backgrounds. Few of them had more than 2-4 years college coaching before Tulsa.

SMU

Chad Morris (48 years old) coached HS - HC basically from 1994 to 2009 including 5 years at Stephenville (TX) HS prior to Gillespie. He was OC/QB at Tulsa for 2 years and Clemson for 4.

DC Van Malone came to SMU from 4 years at Oklahoma State after 2 years with Morris at Tulsa (DB). Prior to that was 4 years at Texas A&M and 2 years at North Texas.

OC Joe Craddock is 3 years at SMU after 2 years of Grad Asst at Clemson with Morris. He was playing QB at Middle Tennessee as recent as 2008.

Jeff Traylor came to SMU after two years at Texas; that followed 15 years as HC/AD at Gilmer (TX) HS.

OL is Fry who came to SMU from 2 years as grad asst at Clemson; DL is Buddy Wyatt who is 27 years in coaching most all at Big 12 schools (last 6 were at Kansas after Texas A&M).

Other 4 have connections to Morris at Tulsa (3 of them) or Clemson (1). Only the DB has more than 4 years of college coaching.

Houston

Major Applewhite (38 years old) is largely credited with the Offensive success of the Houston program of the last two years (Tom Herman?). He was at Texas for 4 years prior and Syracuse, etc before that in a 13 year college coaching career.

Only 2 coaches stayed on from the Tom Herman staff (RB and WR)

OC Brian Johnson came to Houston from Mississippi State after 3 years. Played QB under Urban Meyer at Utah and then went with Mullen.

DC Mark D’Onofrio was DC at Miami for 5 years with Al Golden after 6 years at Temple. Also Virginia and Rutgers.

DL Coach Blum comes to Houston after 8 years as a DC of a HS near Houston. OL/AHC Scelfo is former Tulane HC and comes after 7 years of OL with Atlanta Falcons. The DB coach has a 20 year college coaching career and is coming to Houston after one year at Texas.

Two Grad Assistants were promoted – one with 6 years of NFL experience.

Tulane

Willy Fritz (56 years old) coached HS then HC in college for 24 years with conference titles and successful advancement all along the way. (Georgia Southern was before Sam Houston St. was before Central Missouri was before Blinn Juco). His father Harry Fritz was Central Missouri HC in the 50’s.

DC Jack Curtis was with Fritz all 5 years at Georgia Southern (came there from Central Missouri). 20 year college coaching career.

OC Doug Ruse was with Fritz as OC for 5 years at Georgia Southern and last 2 at Sam Houston.

AHC/OL Alex Atkins was with Fritz 2 years at Georgia Southern and was OL at Chattanooga for 2 years prior. Played at Tennesee Martin as recent as 2007.

The DL, LB, WR coaches all have history with Fritz. The DB, TE coaches come from the very successful McNeese State (Louisiana program) and RB coach comes from Liberty (long career) is a native of New Orleans.

Memphis

Mike Norvell (35 years old) coached with Morris at Tulsa under Todd Graham (2009-2010) and came to Memphis after 4 years “deputy” Head Coach and OC at Arizona State. Also at Pitt.

DC Chris Ball was co-DC at Arizona State for all 4 of Norvell’s years; and was 4 years DC at Washington State before that. 25 year college coaching career at mostly major programs.

OC Darrell Dickey has been at Memphis a total of 9 years; including the last 4 of Fuentes. Father Jim Dickey was highly successful coach at Kansas State – the first time KState was good.

DL Paul Randolph was with Graham/Norvell at Tulsa, Pitt, ASU and has 20+ years exp.

OL Eric Silverfield was in OL coaching in the NFL for 8 years at various levels with a short tenure with Graham at ASU.

WR David Johnson came after 4 years on Tulane staff and before that lots of HS in greater NO.

2 assistants were basically Grad Assistants at major programs with Norvell connections; 2 (LB & DB) were longer term Assistants at Western programs Utah State and Fresno State.

USF

Charlie Strong (56 years old) has been a HC at Louisville (4 years) and Texas (3 years) and a acknowledged valued assistant and recruiting star for 20 years prior – mostly at Florida.

DC Brian Jean-Marie was with him at both Texas and Louisville but not as DC just LB.

OC Sterlin Gilbert was OC at Texas in Strong’s last year; and was with Tulsa one year (*Montgomery) and with Dino Babers at Bowling Green and Eastern Illinois.

OL Matt Mattox was with Gilbert at all four stops – one year with Strong as OL in Texas.

WR Charlie Williams was with Strong one year at Texas; and with NFL teams for the previous 7 years. 20+ years in college including UNC top years 2008-2009.

RB Shaun King is the lone holdover from Taggart (was QB) and played NFL.

2 assistants were basically Grad Assistants at Texas. The two new DL coaches had Strong relationships – one was a FL HS coach last year and the other was at Marshall (Florida grad assistant prior). Large Florida backgrounds in many of the younger coaches.

UCF

Scott Frost (42 years old) has been a HC at UCF (2 years) and before that 7 years at Oregon (last 4 as OC) and 2 at Northern Iowa

DC Erik Chenander was with Frost all of the last 9 years; OLB at Oregon.

OC/WR Troy Walter was a player with Frost at Stanford; then to the NFL. His College career includes 3 years WR at Colorado. Before that WR coach at Texas A&M and NC State.

DL Mike Dawson was an Asst DL with NFL Eagles (Chip Kelly) and before that Special teams at BC and LB at New Hampshire.

OL Greg Austin was Asst OL with NFL Eagles (Chip Kelly) and was a grad assistant at Oregon for several years. Played with Frost at Nebraska as a OG.

TE/RC Sean Beckton is an oddity. 16 years at UCF through several coaching regimes. DB Travis Fisher is also a holdover from O’Leary – Florida native. One year in SE Missouri.

And Mario Verduzco is QB coach with Bill Walsh, Terry Shea and Northern Iowa backgrounds in 39 years of college coaching.

OL 27 year coaching veteran Ron Crook last 4 years at WVU. Prior 10 at Harvard and then Stanford.

TWO huge noted Assistants – Joker Phillips WR coach 30 year college coaching career includes 3 years as HC at Kentucky (and some NFL) was with Fickell as the Ohio State. Jon Tenuta 35 years college coaching has a long deserved Defense reputation – mainly at Georgia Tech then NC State and then Virginia. DB coach.

Phenomenal work here Pudge- its really interesting to see the depth of experience on our staff compared to some of the other teams in our league. I think Tulsa is really primed for a breakout season even with the loss of Dane Evans- their offensive scheme is really really special. Will be fun to see them playing at the Rent this fall, I hope to get out there in 2018 if Montgomery is still their coach.

I do wonder though how this experience on our staff will help us. It seems to me like youth has been served very well in this league (sans Diaco). Maybe this is a reason we can show a quick turnaround this season.
