Even Notre Dame can't be Notre Dame anymore. They need every one of their 5 "in conference" ACC Games and two annual rivalries to make up the meat of their schedule. This still leaves them with 5 slots to fill. Its do able because ND is still a desirable OOC Match up for other programs. That said it would be a hell of a lot harder to make an appealing schedule w/o their ACC Affiliation. Match ups with Army, Umass, Liberty and others would be far more common, even for ND.

Not if the P5 all start going to 9 conference games.

The CFB playoff tells us that winning your division and conference matters a lot and that OOC losses against other P5 schools hurt a lot more than in conference losses. If you are a major P5 school and the magic # is 10 or 11 wins plus the championship game, why schedule ND as one of your 3 OOC games especially if you have to travel to their stadium? Why give ND, who does not have the potential conference championship loss to keep them out of the top 4, any kind of chance for a high quality win?

If ND did not have the ACC deal, they would have a schedule that would not look much different than it is today with a bunch of mid-level (BC, UNC, PITT, Cuse, etc) P5 schools and a couple their "traditional" games against Stanford, USC, Navy and MI. It would be a top 35 schedule strength wise but Bama, UGA, Miami, Clemson, TX, etc are not going to be beating a path to play them. Their ACC deal benefits only ND, kind of like how the BE deal only benefited ND too.

They also play road games at Georgia, FIU, Georgia Southern, Ohio, and BC. Which isn’t great either, but I’m sure we could getter better games than that.

Not giving an opinion one way or the other. An independent FB schedule, in this day and age, is only a possibility if MBB and WBB dominate (which isn't the situation). I could possibly envision a scenario where MBB plays great and retains its stature -as in the BE, women's BB will always dominate wherever it is. But with our 5 year outlook the only course of action is to hope MFB gets better while staying in the AAC . Now if MBB starts winning the ACC and UConn MFB is still midling then all bets are off.

So we are stuck in AAC until FB gets miles better. Maybe at that point we can have the hopefully improveed MBB and league conversations.

Lets hope we regain our prominence as a FB program and our MBB team simultaneously regains its stature so that we can talk our future.

So lets go HCRE and HC Hurley.

Not as simple in an era of 9 game conference schedules. Mid season and late season scheduling would be more challenging than years ago.

Notre Dame has some traditional rivals that would make it easier than some other places but they would be playing lots of games against mid-low P5 And Home& Homes with AAC Teams.
