'I'm back home': Why Kayleigh Heckel transferred to UConn

I remember being really impressed with Kayleigh last summer before she started at USC, and learning that she was not really being developed there I'm very excited to see how she grows at UCONN under the guidance of Geno, CD, et al!

Whatever her reasons, Kayleigh if she wants to progress will be "battle tested" and challenged by Geno and one of the best in the business coaching staff. We want all the Huskies to succeed and coming to UConn was not only the right decision but overall very best decision Kayleigh could make in her young career to improve her game and be as ready as possible for the professional level if that is where she wants her basketball journey to take her.

Still would like to know if there was any interest from or towards UC when she was choosing a college. Bonedog had some good speculation...but somebody (?) must have some actual info.

Hard to imagine a true point guard, a team oriented player, being happy on a team where they are actually coached to focus on getting the ball to one player! Let’s face it, that was an unhealthy team environment. One that was unfair to everyone concerned, including JuJu herself.

Just imagine how our team would have fractured and become a lesser one had Geno built our entire game plan around making Sarah score 26+ ppg. Of course he would never do such a thing as he knows that even the greatest player can only maximize her abilities by playing as part of a greater whole and that making other players better is actually an important skill in it’s own right.

I can only imagine the outside pressure that must have been brought to bear on Gottlieb, (a pretty good coach who knows better) in order for her to play that way. I am especially sad for JuJu herself as I believe she is/was also playing under constant pressure to score, score, score! While I do not know much about her, I’m guessing she would be much happier playing the game the right way. Perhaps I’m wrong but that style of play almost inevitably leads to resentment from other players who feel left out.

Even the tragic play where JuJu was injured was an example of the “wrong” coaching on that team. She had a completely unguarded, wide open teammate streaking to the basket next to her and simply put her head down and tried to score. Just think what would happen here if one of our players (even Sarah or Azzi) did that! They would immediately be on the bench! Of course, that did not cause her injury but one has to wonder about all the games where USC was up 35+ in the fourth and she was still in the game trying to get her 27 points. That, I would posit, is why K9 is now (happily) playing for Geno and UConn!
If you blamed Gottlieb for JuJu's injury, then don't you also have to blame Geno for having Paige on the court in the final minute of a blowout victory over Notre Dame -- the game where Paige injured her knee?

If you think JuJu is selfish or poorly coached, that's one thing. But injuries are a part of the game, no matter how careful a coaching staff or training staff tries to be. To pile on Gottlieb in this instance is misguided.

Heckel ultimately chose UConn. We should all be pleased about that and let USC deal with its own problems.

For whatever it’s worth, I think both Allie and Morgan were rated ahead of Kayleigh as guards in the Class of 2024. Once Geno had commitments from both of them, along with Sarah, I’m not sure if it made a lot of sense to pursue Kayleigh, although a year later here she is at UConn.

I have searched many sites which list the overall rankings of high school grads from the class of 2024,
The highest I saw Kayleigh was a #4 ranking. Sarah was #1, and the only guard ahead of Kayleigh was Allie.

And many people did blame Geno back then. But the thing about some injuries is that they’re weeks in the making. Taking Paige or Juju out of a game a little earlier might not avert some injuries for long. What might be needed is a focused program to train kids to avoid the movements that lead to injury. From what I gather, Paige didn’t take that sort of thing fully seriously until after her second injury. Kids tend to focus on rehabbing as quickly as they can. But Paige eventually learned to focus much more broadly on gait analysis and nutrition, and I think she passed this insight on to Azzi. During the OU game, Holly Rowe talked about this.

fyi -- there was a huge load of bitchin' about geno on the BY when that happened. not by all. just to inform you.

and morgan was among the 5 finalists for the high schoool naismith award == won by sarah/

neither kayleigh nor allie made that list ... though perhaps they should have.

What strikes me is that Caroline and Ayanna may be the only players she hasn’t encountered before. And Blanca, too, when she arrives. And her fondness for Sarah is interesting too. I have a feeling her preference was determined a lot sooner than any of us anticipated.
Yes I agree. She really is a natural UCONN type of player. Whether she was leaving or not before JuJu got hurt we will never know but after there was no real stopping her in my mind.

I'm more interested in discussing UConn and our many strengths than critiquing other teams and their coaches. Prior to Juju's injury, USC was a top 3 team that some analysts favored over UConn. In the years we lost Paige, there was also a lot of commentary on strategies Geno could have implemented. Looking through the rear-view mirror can be interesting but serves little purpose.

Geno absolutely does coach his non-star players to get the ball to their teammates who are the scorers, and he coaches the scorers to take it to the rim rather than passing off when they have a scoring opportunity. There was an early play in one of the Final Four games this year where Sarah took the ball to the hoop and scored even though Kaitlyn Chen was unguarded on the wing. Rebecca commented that in earlier games, Sarah would probably have passed that ball to Kaitlyn, but Geno and the staff had been coaching her for the last few weeks NOT to pass if she had any opportunity to score.

He has been doing that for all of the two decades that I've been following UConn. When Kalana Greene took a couple 3-point attempts that missed, Geno told her something like, "If you want a three, pass it to Renee or Maya and let them shoot". It's just good, standard coaching that any good coach would do.

This would have merit if all things were equal, but they weren't. Available healthy roster spots. Geno doesn't ignore any player who wants to work and progress, apparently not the case with Gottlieb. I don't blame Gottlieb for the injury, an injury can happen anytime, even getting out of bed. But I do lay on her the fact that so many have left stating they were ignored and very under coached. That's on her, no way to sugar coat it.

I question Gottlieb's coachingas well, but besides kayleigh, who are the many that have stated that?
