Strictly speaking, a bellwether is the leading sheep of a flock with a bell around its neck. But the common use of the term is as an indicator of what's to come. It is very possible that if either team has a resounding victory tonight, that could generate optimism. The opposite effect would occur for a thrashing defeat.
