Just as Icebear's white coloring helps him surprise Harp seals, deep in the shadows of the wine cellar, my auburn hue helps me sneak up on unsuspecting vats of vino...

I still cannot forget the polar bears we saw last year in the Portland Zoo - the size was so awesome. And just on the other side of a very thick pane of glass.

Without starting a debate (I hope) about the humaneness of animal captivity, let me just share that this experience - of being so close to them - made me appreciate these magnificent animals and their challenges more than any TV documentary I have ever seen.
